I usually unscrew the battery cap so no contact for the battery a slight rattle let's me know I've done it or unscrew the rda or rta so it won't make contact. one thing you didn't say is the mech a hybrid 510 or normal 510 like a box mod i.e spring loaded

I would do what I said either battery cap so you can hear the battery rattle or unscrew the rda/rta your using takes only a few seconds to screw either back on or just keep it in your hand and don't play with the fire switch until your ready to vape

You don't want to be unscrewing the atty on a hybrid with the cell installed.
