Just a quickie. I got my vice today so I can hopefully use a router bit in the pillar drill and cut nice and accurately.
Im waiting on some 4 flute bits to arrive but I couldn't wait giving it a go.
The only small bit I had has a single blade and it didnt seem to cut straight when I went with the grain of then wood. So my question is, will it be better with a 4 flute router bit?
Thanks in advance.

It might work, but I am not sure you will get the rpm high enough on a piller drill tbh. IIRC, a router runs somewhere about 15,000rpm, most are variable speed now a days.

I think you're right. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to buy a new machine. Oh well, out with the wallet again.
Thanks Gary.

Anyone got a suggestion of a budget milling machine? I've been looking at the proxxon mf70 which looks good but I don't think it goes high enough to accommodate an 100mm mod. Any advice?

Don't think Ive ever seen a hobby milling machine for wood other than a proxxon.

I'm no expert when it comes to wood but I think you need high rpm and high feed rate when milling so you don't burn the wood, could totally wrong tho.

Thanks fella. There are a few bits on the wooden enclosures that I'd like to have real precision. Maybe the proxxon will do the trick. The majority of the cutting will be done with a router.

Not much to add, apart from recalling my dad used a thread tap in his electric drill as a kind of router to remove most of the wood from a block I was creating a model boat from. :P
Saved me a heap of chiseling :)

Makes sense in a bish bosh way. Afterall, metal is harder than wood ;)

Woodrat if you like the router
Spiral upcut for milling out boxes is a good cutter
Pillar drills in general the quill ( bit that holds the chick) is not sturdy enough to prevent wandering of the bit
Don't know if woodrat is still available but if it is then a bloke like you will soon be turning out quality dovetailed stands boxes and puzzle box type mods
