So I stopped smoking last night and have been vaping since then. When I ordered my vape gear, I also got some liquid, and because I had never tried nicotine salt liquid, I thought I'd give it a go. But when I vape it, it really makes me cough. I never had that problem with normal nicotine. Is that because it is 50% VG / 50% PG or is nicotine salts the reason? A couple of years ago, I used to vape high VG liquid with normal nicotine and never had this problem before.

Hello, unfortunately it's not uncommon that salts make people cough. It can affect people in different ways and there are quite a few people who cannot vape salts precisely because it makes them cough. I'd order some normal (freebase) nicotine to try instead and see how you get on with that.
Thank you for your reply. I'll get some short fills with some normal 100% VG nicotine shots then in that case and see if it helps.

Are you vaping mouth to lung (MTL) or direct to lung (DTL)? What strength salts did you get?
DTL and 10mg salts.

In which case yeah I'd probably stick to the normal nic really, the only other option would be to get a 20mg nic salt shot to add to a shortfill and try that so the VG is higher as DL with 50/50 isn't ideal but if you know you can vape shortfills with a high VG shot in then I'd stick with that.

DTL at 50/50 and with 10mg of nic sounds to me like it could be your issue. Common approach for DTL is 70/30 and max 6mg although I’m sure there’s the odd iron lung out there who will handle more.

I use 12mg salts 70/30 at about 40/45w dtl at the moment It's weird because I'm not too good with freebase nic but the salts are a lot smoother for me. I don't get the wheeze or coughing a lot of people seem to.
@Cromulent I'd recommend you go to 6mg normal nicotine at 70/30 ratio for your dtl vaping. If that's too harsh you could drop to 3mg, that's what most folk use. It all depends as well what wattage and coils you're using. For instance I won't go above 45w for my salts and won't go over 70w for normal nicotine on a usual mesh coil. That's just my limits, you might be able to go higher or might prefer it lower yourself.

Everytime I vape salts I end up coughing. No matter if its 10 or 20mg. It just makes my throat itchy.
And theres the flavour question also. Many people dont notice, but it tastes like wet newspaper to me (ruining the flavour completely)
So, the few times I MTL/RDL y use 6mg freebase liquids and presto!
With time I learned that PG, unless your allergic, dont makes too much difference in harshness. I vape around 50%PG all the time.
