Olbas oil isn't poisonous as such.... but the menthol in it is not good for children under 6 months, it can actually cause bretahing issues - like a sucker-punch-throat-hit. The bit she sucked off the bib would not really be enough to kill her! It's not like she drank half a bottle!
I am pretty sure all of us grew up with Vick Vapo Rub and survived.....
Good chance poor Lily had an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients....
So what is in it
Peppermint Oil - not dangerous or poisonous, can be ingested in large amounts, skin safe (although uncomfortable)
Eucalyptus - not dangerous, main ingredient in cough sweets, can cause allergic reactions but generally skin safe
Cajeput Oil - safe when diluted (it's quite expensive, so not likely to be a large amount in it), can cause skin irritation, especially if used neat
Wintergreen Oil - not this is a shocker! This is highly toxic and should not be in any product, apart from minute amounts! I hope, this isn't in the children's version! Yes, it is natural, but so is Ricin.... it says it contains less than 4% in formulation, which still seems a lot! (this is the warning from the Aromatherapy Website: Special Precautions & Warnings:Children: Wintergreen leaf and oil can be poisonous for children. Taking 4-10 mL of wintergreen oil by mouth can be deadly. Don’t even use wintergreen oil on the skin of children less than 2 years old.)
Juniper Oil - safe and good for the skin
Clove - numbing, most likely in there for the smell or to numb the skin so the other irritants don't hurt so much
Now as dangerous as wintergreen is, the child sucked it off a bib- there would have been 2ml in total on the bib, so less than 0.2ml of wintergreen.... not deadly - I think the skin irritation from the essential oils plus a possible allergic reaction was her issue.
It's like PG in our juice - BUT IT'S IN ANTIFREEEZE!
