I kept filling around with it and got it turned on.
I'm not really sure how though.

Hello @GammyT and welcome to POTV! It would help if you could tell us what make/model your vape is.

as mentioned, there are hundreds of kits out there so knowing what make, model you have would help us help you.
you can post a picture if you dont know.
majority but not all are 5 clicks on/off. 3 clicks to enter menu

If it uses an external battery most Chinese mods will power up when you insert the battery/batteries, but, as 'MrDJ mentioned most mods turn on/off by clicking the power button 5 times
