As soon as you have got the coil glowing nice and bright, blow on it and any crud stuck to it from previous use should flake off revealing a nice white wick between the coils. If the wick doesn't turn white then it is burnt and will continue giving a burnt taste. New coil required then drstevo. If the big hand goes past mickey mouse then you have been dry burning far too long and it's time for a cuppa before re-coiling.

You can dry burn on a vv ego, also depends on what atty your using. With the ce4's, vivis etc I used to remove the head and soak in boiling water then get most of the moisture out with kitchen towel before dry burning. But since I have learned, you can torch silica to dry it out, then you don't have to use the battery so much before it glows. I usually hold the button in for about 5 seconds.
