The thing about TC is you don't have to stick to the ohmage you are used to, because you set the temperature anyway.
SS works best in TC mode at around 0.5 ohms or so. That's the sweet spot in terms of ramp up time, whilst having enough resistance to give enough variability in the resistance as the temperature of the coil changes.
For a given gauge of wire, too high a resistance (too many wraps) and it takes too long to heat up and cool down, meaning the TC circuits are always "chasing" behind trying to maintain temperature, whereas too low a resistance and there isn't enough of a change in resistance to allow the TC circuit to keep accuracy.
You can easily MTL on a 0.5 ohm SS roundwire coil - if it's too hot, turn the temperature down.
