Hi guys having measurements taken 12th of Feb for long awaited surgery. Anesthetist said to stop vaping as they don't know how the ingredients affect anesthetic?

They seem pretty clueless about vaping in general was the jist I got from our conversation.

I'm a sub 9hm dtl vaper.

Any advice from those who have had the procedure under a general anesthetic (and those who haven't)

Can't see myself not vaping lol.

Many thanks.

Many years ago when i was a smoker, i had surgery and was told to stop before the op. I think the reason given was that smoking mixed with anaesthetic gas could cause vomiting whilst under. I don't know if it was nicotine or the nasties in smoke that was to blame. Probably the latter.

Recently had a General Anaesthetic and during the pre op conversation with the Anaesthetist he told me that nowadays they are taking a far more relaxed view on Vapers as opposed to Smokers. Ironically I didn't vape at all on the day of the procedure, but that was my choice.

when i had my teeth removed i had too have an anesthetic, they didnt mention anything & i was fine.

I have blocked arteries in my legs from my years Bus Driving and went to the hospital to get them sorted. They wouldn't do anything because i smoked. They told me the reason was that Nicotine stops the blood clotting which isn't good when you want wounds to heal. I ended up never getting my legs sorted. It's not as much of an issue now seeing as i can't get out.

^^ That makes no sense as means they'd never operate on anyone who ingests nicotine.

That's what i was told by the Doctor who would have been doing the surgery, i don't think he would say it unless he couldn't be bothered doing the job. I didn't question it because he probably knows a bit more about it than me.

Glad to hear it`s gotten to your turn, good luck with it, at least when you`re finally fixed you`ll have a good grounding in building :)

I’ve had several operations here in Norway, and every time they’ve warned me not to use nicotine 24 hrs before the operation, because of the anesthesia. I have chosen to ignore this completely (my choice), and have vaped to my heart’s content prior to admission :11: My logic was, quite simply, that going through nicotine withdrawals during the operation was not a good idea (and I was less nervous)…

After my first cancer operation, as soon as I could stand, I was outside in a bathrobe with my IV, vaping away. On one of my trips outside, I met my surgeon, and he firstly praised me for quitting smoking, and then told me they were overly cautious, and that it would’ve been far more dangerous if I had taken an aspirin a day or two before the operation :hmm:

I am not advocating for you to take any risks, just conveying my experience :)
