Yes, they're making fun of a current issue but it's like mainstream propaganda.

Most of the people who believe the negative media & lies don't need the simpsons to reinforce their belief. It won't make any difference to the situation. In fact it might be good because it's exposure & it isn't until something is damned that we can defend it.

For reference Bart has already been shown drinking alcohol and smoking cigars in previous episodes. I believe Maggie and Lisa have also been drunk/hungover.

There have been numerous drug references/uses in the show.
