Vaping on the simpsons

Americans aint the sharpest when it comes to satire and sarcasm, I'm not suggesting any one would confuse a cartoon with reality. I can see the conservatives flipping out about this kind of thing and it's all fuel for the fire.

On a more serious note mate, I totally get your OP & why you aired it, yes, it is more of the same mindset manifested in yet another medium & so it contributes to the misinformed nonsense that we would all like to see demystified, agreed.
However, i don't think it'll cause any more damage than that which has already been done, crusty the clown has been an alcoholic childrens icon in the UK since about 1980 & i can still buy a bottle whisky & nail it in front of my nephews & nieces, doesn't mean i will but i'm still free to do so if i wish, it didn't get banned !
I say let them all stir the pot & flag the negatives, let them all prove themselves wrong, give 'em enough rope & they'll hang themselves. The respectable British 70's public didn't like punk rock but it worked.

Ok great. I get it, you don't see the same issues here as I do.

I don't think, even in the world of cartoons, that a robot smoking a cigar or an alcoholic clown are the same as portraying children and babies 'smoking', which is how a lot of middle america will see it. Sure there may not be an uproar about it but the satire aspect is easily missed for a lot of people and it's little things like this that are another nail in the coffin.

Although declining in viewership, the simpsons is still a pretty large primetime show with characters beloved by many. Given how the topic was handled I certainly don't think it will help the public perception at all.

YMMV

I've always enjoyed The Simpsons on TV.
Do agree that this latest ( aired in the UK) series on Sky has been a bit hit and miss.
The writers try to reflect current trends and fashions so it's no surprise that vaping would be featured at some point.
There's always been a strong anti-smoking sub text to The Simpsons. Smokers featured tend to be unlovely characters and are often shown coughing up gobs of phlegm.
Patty n Selma for two and Menthol Moose for another.
Maybe they're taking the same line with vaping.
Ultimately, it's a cartoon show on TV, entertaining for 20 minutes then you switch over to something else.

Seriously I'd be worried about how the East and West coast liberal establishment perceives it. You didn't see the midwest ban big gulps or the increase the age restrictions for the use of tobacco or alcohol until the east and west coast starting to press the issue. The Simpsons demographic seems to cater to these specific areas....imho.

Sigh, of course i get it, it's as obvious as an elephant in a room, i'm just saying it doesn't matter. The damage caused to vaping has been & is been manufactured all the time, it has to come out, it has to go through this & we can't do anything about it. What's the worst that can happen ? A ban ? Whatever, bring it on. It's just one more detail amidst an entire repertoire of ongoing shit & i for one am not worried in the slightest about any of it. This time next year we'll either be vaping or we won't, life goes on.

It's a character by the same creator aimed at the same audience. Should kids be watching aldults smoking, drinking & vaping then but not other kids.
