Hi guys,

First attempt at DIY. I bought nicotine based in VG and VG from Vampire Vapes, used the calculator and mixed up a batch of 100% VG 6mg e-liquid, flavourless. However I am getting a very harsh throat hit, where as on my usual juices at 6mg I get no throat hit at all (90% VG/10% PG and even got no throat hit from Chalk Dust's 70% VG and 30% PG). For experiments sake, I build a new coil, vaped a couple of smooth hits of some pure VG in it, added the 6mg nicotine I made last night and getting harsh throat hits again (on the same wick). So it is definitely not the VG or the wick, what is wrong here?

Thank you in advance!

What strength is the Nic base and many ml's of nic did you use in the final say 10ml?

If you are using 72mg nicotine base then you need to add 0.63ml of nic base per 10ml
For 50mg nic base it's 1.2ml per 10ml
I'd double check that your dilutions are correct, and POTVers can go from there with additional help/advice.

Could be that you are using too much nicotine as others have suggested, or it could be that you are using low quality nicotine.

I made 30ml's of liquid using 2.5 ml's of Vampire Vape's (which I heard being recommended somewhere on the forum and Vampire Vape allegedly say its pharma grade nicotine with batch numbers etc.) 72mg nicotine and 27.5 ml's of VG. I double checked the values with Steam Engine and PotV calculator.

I can try mixing another solution/diluting further with VG but this doesn't make any sense (and will try to do today if I have time, for experimenting sake). I'm sure the calculations and amounts I did the other night are correct. I know that flavoured liquids need to be steeped for a couple of days but that should affect the flavouring as far as I know, not the smoothness of the vape? Am I missing something obvious here? The only thing I can make out of all this is that those 6mg liquids I'm buying are not really 6mg.

Best thing to do is a process of elimination-

It can't be a problem with your device as you have vaped other liquids which taste fine, therefore there must be an issue with the mix.

You haven't got any flavours, so that is ruled out, which leaves three possible reasons:
  • Poor quality ingredients
  • Incorrect amounts
  • Steeping / maturing

I only use the nicotine from the Make My Vape labs over here which has always been a good vape for me, but as you say Vampire Vapes has been mentioned as a quality vendor of ingredients, therefore it can only possibly be amounts of ingredients or steeping.

Your amounts sound reasonable- so if these are correct and you haven't overlooked any mistakes, it can only possibly be steeping from this point.

VG tends to take longer to steep than PG. Also, your nicotine may be carried in PG, therefore you have to wait for the nicotine to mature with the VG as they are two different substances trying to combine with eachother (whereas if the nicotine was carried in VG there would be less chemical bonds required). This may result in the nicotine sitting at the top of your e-liquid as PG is lighter than VG, and when you filled your tank you got a huge dose of nicotine which hasn't fully blended with the VG yet.

From this analysis, I'd recommend making a new mix (as you have emptied a lot of the 'unsettled' nicotine out of the mix) and leaving it to steep for as long as you can, maybe even a week if possible.
