The pod does split along the middle near the base of the pod, you'll see a couple of latches along the side of the pod but it is rather difficult to do and it seems to be where a lot of people devices leak from so you might weaken that seal.
If you pull the coil out if the bottom you can run water into the pod to clean it out a bit easier (put the dust protector cap on the drip tip/cover it so water doesn't just go all the way through) only small problem with this is you can't fully dry it afterwards... Means you don't have to open the pod though.
*To be honest I don't think that rubber would cause much of a problem if you left it in, the melting point is way higher than the boost will ever get and rubber is not toxic... That's if the bung is made just of rubber though.
*Arrow shows one of the slots to split the pod in half, theres 1 the other side and 2 smaller ones on each end. Just above the orange line is where the pod comes apart.
