I spotted this on the Facebook feed of about the Birmingham story, we also blogged the story here.First we need to get it across that BATTERIES are “safe” as long as they are cared for and used properly. But like any other battery, they can suffer faults. Remember last year, Massive recall on MacBook Pro due to fires…How about Samsung’s recent problem, (yesterday!) when a phone battery exploded in a mans pocket?

And there was a woman who died of an electric shock after answering her iphone while it was on charge. I think its funny how all these stories are quickly brushed under the carpet and forgotten about and yet make such a big deal about ecig batteries.

That's just given me an idea, I need to start an anti toaster lobbying campaign. Toasters need to be banned in case someone decides to take a bath with one. :D

so what's the big deal about charging from a USB port on a computer?

The weight of the battery pulls down on the connections potentially causing a short and the vent with flames situation depicted above.

If you have to use a usb charger, get a heavy duty usb lead and a 2a usb wall connector. And ensure your charger is actually regulated to cut off at 4.2v and only charge at the current correct for the battery - .5a for > 650ma batteries 1a for <1000mah batteries.

Put your ecig on a flame resistant material or in a lipo bag. The usb lead lets the ecig sit on a solid surface with putting weight on the connections. The regulated charger ensure the battery is not over charged. The flame resistant surface/lipo bag contains things if the worst happens.

Personally I wont use this type of set up at all. I don't trust the batteries, dont trust the chargers. I'll stick to 18650 cells and chargers I can test for output/cut off voltage.

When a laptop is switched on, the voltage is constantly fluctuating. as the hard drive spins up, the current changes. when you open a web page, the current changes. when the pc/laptop/whatever does "anything" the electric current changes. This increases the potential for spike which are sharp rises in voltage to counter the extra load when "something" happens. if your charger isn't a respectable one, the chances are it just sits there chatging away, and that's when the problem starts. this is also why car chargers are a ticking bomb, it's just plain stooped to subject a contained electrical current to adverse conditions. Play safe, use a wall socket charger or dedicated, monitored charger, and stay away from using a pc/laptop/tablet/virgin sky box/xbox/ps4 etc etc etc lol.
