Blunder Down Under

I want a ban on recreational coffee drinking and teenage caffeine use! How dare they enjoy themselves!!!
I don't think I've ever done recreational coffee drinking, I don't even like the taste...
.. I only drink coffee cos it's hot, wet, and hopefully will wake me up a bit.. and doesn't taste as bad as tea...

Vaping is far more recreational :)2

Australia: a special kind of stupid
https://velvetgloveironfist.blogspot.com/2023/06/australia-special-kind-of-stupid.html
More bad news from the supposed world leader in tobacco control. Official figures show that teen smoking rates rose sixfold between 2018 and 2023, from 2% to 12.8%.
If you spoke to someone from the reality-based community, they would tell you that children find it easier to access a product when the market is in the hands of illicit traders because illicit traders don't care who they sell to. They might also point out that the Australian government has gone out of its way to portray vaping as being at least as bad as smoking. School children in Australia are taught that vaping causes brain damage. Public health agencies produce websites that purport to tell people the facts about vaping but actually tell them lies and misleading half-truths.

Senator Canavan -
"The prescription model that was introduced in 2020 on any metric has to be noted as a massive failure.
Why should we have any faith that the same people that were totally wrong about 2020 reforms would be right about the 2023 reforms?
I said at the time it would lead to a massive growth in the black market. Maybe this will be taught in future lessons how not to create policy because I would have thought that before making a major policy decision in Australia that good policy practices would mean looking at other similar, models around the world, such as NZ. How can you justify not doing that basic work before a gov makes a serious decision here?
We tried to crack down on the black market with a prescription model. A total failure. We have had an increase in youth [18-24] vaping from 5-25%, and we are just incentivising it again. This is an absolute failure of public policy which I predict will only lead to further failure."

The vape scare down under

The Health Secretary Steve Barclay is reported to be interested in learning from Australia’s experience with e-cigarette regulation. Quoted in The Times this week, he said: “I met a leading Australian figure this morning in terms of some of the lessons around the vaping industry in Australia, and how we can look at what has been done there and are there any lessons that we can share with each other.”
Britain does indeed have much to learn from Australia’s approach to vaping, in the same way as air crash investigators have much to learn from a black box. They say that every air crash makes air travel safer so long as the authorities understand what went wrong. On that basis, the world can benefit from studying the smouldering crater of Australia’s tobacco control policies.

Somebody voted for these twats we call a uk government wasn't me though lol

The Blunder Down Under now rears it's ugly head in Scotland...
https://snowdon.substack.com/p/send-back-the-clowns
Scottish ministers are being urged to copy Australia and make e-cigarettes prescription only in a bid to tackle a new “epidemic of vaping” among young people.
Health campaigners at Ash Scotland made the plea amid growing concern over youngsters vaping.
It has now urged the Scottish Government to “strongly consider following Australia’s precautionary approach to e-cigarettes” by making products containing nicotine available with a prescription only.
Professor Emily Banks, a public health specialist at the Australian National University, and Emeritus Professor Mike Daube from the faculty of health sciences at Curtin University in Western Australia, spoke about their experiences at events organised by Ash Scotland in Edinburgh.
What words can express that overpaid fuckwits will bring their idiotic & failed dogma all the way from Aus, and attempt to unleash it on another country...

Emotive & justified article of one vaper's experience of the harsh realities of Australia's deplorable approach to vaping -
The desperation, rage and panic of being a vaper in Australia – one vaper’s story

The adult ex-smoker vapers in this country are just to be considered collateral damage in his ham-fisted social engineering project. To Mark Butler, we are not people with stories, families, long histories of battling their former tobacco habit.
We are just subjects to be manipulated as numbers on a spreadsheet while he uses the blunt tool of government force to make a huge mess in our lives. I’m not even sure he thinks for himself, he appears to just take orders from unelected academic zealots. Those academics hate us as a group too, and they are hated right back as the narrow-minded quack anti adult ex-smoker bigots that they are.
We were minding our own business, abiding by the law, getting our GP scripts, nursing our smoking cessation with a harm-reduction device. Then you came for us. You’re a bully Mark. You’re a gutless thug. This is a king hit, a coward punch.
