Capella Vanilla Custard seems to be the base of just about every custard recipe out there, i'm getting sick of the smell to be honest.

I recently got a bottle of Perfumer's Apprentice Vanilla Custard and it smells wonderful, currently got a batch steeping away in a drawer. The smell alone is multitudes better than Capella. Also price is brilliant, about £12 for 100ml.

Now i'm wondering if there are any other decent custard concentrates out there?

I've recently tried one from Alchemists Cupboard which is one of their own i think "Natural essence of Vanilla Custard" and this stuff is vile, there is no creamyness to be found and it has an ungodly bitter earthy note in there, one to avoid methinks.

I'm thinking the Alchemists one is vile because there's no Acetoin or Acetyl Propionyl in there, this is much in abundance in Capella and PA concentrates.

So any other custard concentrates out there with the nice yellowy Acetoin / Acetyl Propionyl tinge to them? I think this is the key to a good custard.

I'm willing to spend some hard-earned so i can do a round-up of all the best custards.

Flavour art offer one. Smells weak though. I can't be bothered to vape it.

I've read about that one, seems to be lacking in the "custard ingredients" would probably need to be adulterated with lashings of a cream concentrate to make up for it.

The FlavourArt one is more of a European custard. It's light, more egg and lemon (not much egg though). It works well if coupled with Vanilla Classic or Caramel or similar.

My favourite is Cupcake World custard concentrate. This is good on its own after a long steep, but I also add various other flavours -

PA French Vanilla Deluxe
Bavarian Cream
Malted Milk
Condensed Milk
Butter Cream

All these add to the creaminess, as opposed to Dulce de Leche and Egg Nog which are disgusting.

Thanks Ment, i'll add that one to the list.

Who does a condensed milk concentrate? Been looking for something like that to bulk up my selection of creamy concentrates.

I hate cupcake world custard. Weak, but what taste/smell there is resembles soil - can't garner even a hint of custard out of it

Erm...what the flipping fudge?

Are you on a wind-up or seriously deluded?

They provide the creamy note i'm after.

Anything i've tried so far that tastes remotely creamy contains those (Capella / Perfumers Apprentice)

"Why don't you use the Capella V2?" i hear you cry...

Butyric Acid. Could be worse than some Diketones, who really knows?

I'm avoiding Diacetyl, and that's good enough for me for now.

I didn't cry, that was the sound of air intake in awe of your ability to spot compounds by eye alone.
