Firstly, let me state clearly that I did not and do not support the flavor ban instituted in California. And of course, I find Bloomberg’s funding of the campaign insidious.
But I will give the Chinese manufacturers a good part of the blame, as well. They flooded the market in California for years with 50mg vapes with some horrendous designs on the disposables that one could easily claim appealed to teens. Most high schools in California had problems to varying degrees with vaping. Anecdotally, I can convey that both my niece and nephew told me that half of their respective classes were in the bathrooms vaping on their breaks (including my niece).
Californian middle-class mothers are some of the most reactionary in the world, and there was really only one way it was going to go.
It is critical to note that California, for all its ignorance and arrogance, is a site more democratic than either the UK or Norway. Democracy is messy, and doesn’t always support the logical conclusion. Neither does a simple majority protect the minority in many cases, and vapers were the minority there, without a doubt. Unfortunately, people often vote with their feelings, this is empirically shown, and vapers were the casualty of this. It has also been clear for some time that there is a need to provide equal funding for both sides of an issue, but is not likely to happen.
Even though I don’t agree with them, I will fight till my last breath to defend their right to vote against it.
