According to grizwalds guide to mixing u have to thin out the VG by using around 20% of deionised water or alcohol. Is this essential?

never bothered myself, mix all my liquids at 50/50

If you are using just vegetable glycerine then yes you will have to mix with pure water or alcohol as your solution will be too thick to wick properly in most devices. If you're also using PG then you won't need to.
If you're interested I used distilled water that I bought from Wilkinson's @79p for 1ltr.

i'm using evods ..and have no issues with wicking whatsoever..silica or cotton..
so no..you dont have to dilute with water...however ..,if you do it will almost certainly carry flavour more effectively allowing you to cut down slightly on flavour concentrate's which are pg based.

So in a 60/40 pg/vg mix I wouldn't need it then? I like the sound of the water carrying more flavour though

Nope with that ratio the PG will thin out the VG.
I don't use PG (apart from what's in the flavours) so I have to put in about 15% water otherwise my kayfuns can't pull the liquid into the chamber.

What difference does it make just using the VG then?

no ..pg carries flavour very effectively as well(which presumably is why cheaper liquids tend to be pg heavy), so no need.

Bobd I don't use PG because it brings me out in hives. PG is a better flavour carrier so I have to use a slightly higher ratio of flavourings. It also gives more of a throat hit.
VG on the other hand gives you more vapour.
