It means the patent only exists in America. Because the electronic control of a electrical heating element was developed decades before, using science that was worked out in the 19th century.

The americans are a bit odd about patents. In america Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, in the rest of the world it was Joseph Swann.

I will concede Evolv were the first to develop a TC Mod. But did they actually invent something? Putting existing technology and concepts in a miniaturised hand held form for a different purpose is not the same as inventing something. Also, being the first company to develop a commercial product is not the same as inventing something.
