What's new

e cig lights up an elderly lady at a hospital - the sun (tomorrow)

Brilliant - two media sources in one thread I refuse to click on.

All we need is the story to appear in the "New & Improved Asian Babes" and I'll have the trifecta.

Probably not a good idea to be using an ecig whilst on oxygen anyway. Hope she's alright - but also wondering what the hell she was thinking...

Reminds me of my Pa's 80th birthday when he was in the HD ward after a major operation. My Ma took in a birthday cake & lit the candles on it. The speed of the nurses running over as we sang the happy birthday song was quite impressive.

I'm not going to comment on the story, a tl:dr version of my opinion would be along the lines of the glaringly obvious dangers of creating an extreme amount of heat next to a pure oxygen supply, and to those its not glaringly obvious to, now you know. Science was hard at school right?

Mainly I just cant get over how offensive i find the journalism... i mean, i know the sun and daily mail are bad but c'mon, how can they justify paying a wage to someone for writing articles of that quality. The daily mail writer even clearly demonstrates they cant even interpret the reference correctly by saying "However, a recent study claimed that e-cigarettes may not actually be healthier than their tobacco counterparts" and then immediately follows it with the study being reffered to: "[E-cigarettes] may be safer, but our preliminary studies suggest that they may not be benign". Theres no story there, its a case of reading 'may be' as 'also, may not be', which isnt news to anyone.

I'm almost as alarmed that they get away working at this level of professionalism, as I am at the number of people that read it and soak in every word as fact even when its a self-contradicting un-referenced pile of nonsense that has no resemblance to the definition of the word 'journalism'. I'm not even going to read the Sun article for obvious reasons.

Lack of coffee makes me grumpy enough, futile as it is to get worked up over the Daily Mail. Rant over :)

Of course the fact that she was a heavy smoker who also had a lighter by her bed who may have been confused enough following major surgery to automatically try to light her e-cig won't have anything to do with this, will it?

I haven't bothered to click the links- saw it reported on ArseFace last night... but FFS, she had a LIGHTER by her bed but the conclusion is that 'The e-cig was wot done it'?!!!

Sadly I doubt very much she will be 'alright' and I feel desperately sorry for her and her family but, uh, news flash... Smokers have set light to their oxygen supplies for years...and their beds, sofas, cars....

Maybe one day the occasional e-cig accident will be as un-newsworthy as the occasional fag accident... But I doubt it so I'll be sticking up on supplies and hardware too!!

I sincerely hope that this lady is ok and recovers.

If I drive a car carelessly and a collision occurs as a result, no one blames the car. User error

I remember my dad telling me never light up a fag if I've just used after shave son, it's flammable. User error

I haven't read the details but imagine she was using a lookalikey which, used as intended, really oughtn't to have produced this result. I can't imagine she was dry burning quad micro coils on a RBA rig.

I sincerely hope she`s ok but I refuse to click on the links.
It`s way to early in the week for me to cope with substandard journalism and media bullshit without losing the plot and going postal.

In the meantime, lit Tobacco remains the largest cause of domestic house fires, according to an email I had from the North Yorkshire Fire Service.
I don`t see that making the news...

Ahh "Society" brill film, the scene that had me in hysterics was the "Mom" doing something similar only with her Daughters head popping out with the words..If you have any edible fantasies you want to indulge in Billy...now`s the time"

As for the main topic... all i can say is i hope she recovers ok , and learn NOT to use anything at all around highly flammable sources that may include naked flames or heated elements, and also (to the nursing staff) not to allow their patients said same heated items near beds with fecking Oxygen feeds.. jeez
