What is the easiest gauge to build with? I have 28, but am struggling with it :( can't seem to get a tight coil and get the coils close together! They just seem to spring back, even though I wind under tension.

Are you torching the coil? you need to torch it a bit with blow torch or a lighter and under compression of tweezers or pliers maybe. The heat tempers the kanthal and takes out the tension of the coil.

I'm dry burning them on my mech mod once on there.

You'll find it easier to work with it you torch it before hand.

You can heat the kanthal a little before you rap the coil as we'll, again taking out the tension a little, making the wire more workable.

Tip:- make the raps as tight, close and as neat as possible. Then when you mount the coil you will need less squeezing and heating to get it right. If it's a mess before you put it in your device chances are It won't look good on the device no matter how much squeezing and messing you do.

The lower the gauge the easier it becomes, I'm using 25AWG at the minute, thicker and a lot easier to work with.

I don't torch the wire first, I wrap tight on a blunt needle and then push to the fat bit on the end (technical terms ;) )

Then once it's on the atty I fire it til it's glowing and then pinch with tweezers for 30 seconds or so.

I use 0.3mm Kanthal as my go to wire

The negative holes are lined up but the centre hole is twisted to the side!

I find that while 28 gauge is generally the most useful size, it is also as springy as hell. As others have mentioned already, the way to take some of the springiness out of it to ease your wrapping, is to torch it first before using it. Typically people do this with one of those small gas powered torches that are normally used in kitchens for glazing the tops of creme brulee etc, but at a push, you could use a cigarette lighter.

The other option of course is to change to a thicker gauge Kanthal, which will be easier to work with.

I use 27 gauge 0.36mm for just about everything. So easy to build with.
