Have been trying to do some digging on this but cant seem to find a definitive answer.

I've got a couple of Evods and love the things, but they seems to gunk up pretty quickly. I read something regarding the lower the ohm's - the hotter the coil and this put in my head that maybe a higher ohm coil would provide a bit of longevity?

First question. Is this correct?

Second Question, Im only using a 900mah ego, would a 2.2 or 2.5ohm coil be too much for it?
Id guess its going to reduce battery life between charges, but to be honest I sit at a desk and charge one as soon as its dead, so I always have a charged battery.

thanks

Mine gunk up too but I soak them daily in hot water and it seems to keep them ok for at least a week of use. I use 1.8ohm.

The higher the resistance you use the weaker flavour and vapour you get. It's a trade off between life expectancy and quality of life.

Higher than 2ohm on a fixed voltage battery gives a much worse vape for most people.
It's the voltage that the battery puts out that counts the 900mah bit tells you how long the battery will last a higher resistance coil makes little difference to battery life, it's still putting out 3.7volts when you push the button (assuming it's a fixed voltage one)

You can increase the life of your heads by dry burn cleaning them every couple of tank fulls though on an evod you either need to be really careful with the top 'flavour wicks' or replace them when you do this. A metre of silica will last ages for this purpose (you use about 1cm per week) and will cost you about £2

Strip the head down so that you can see the coil itself and rinse it under some water(take off the top post bit and the flavour wicks) fire the coil on the battery (if you are using fixed voltage eGo batteries it's best to do this with a half used battery) you'll hear a hissing noise as the coil evaporates the water, then more hissing and crackling as you burn off the gunk that is on the coil. Pulse the coil 3-4 secs on then stop firing it and blow on the top (this blows away any off the burnt off crud) repeat this until the wick looks whiter and you can see the metal of the coils, and when you fire it it all glows orange fairly quickly.

Then put the flavour wicks back in (or better replace with fresh wick) push the top back on and it's good to go.

Some juices like steeped tobacco liquids will gunk coils much faster than others.

Thanks @ vapercaper I have been dry burning the heads but leaving the flavour wicks in as the bastards keep getting lost, had to erm, borrow the wicks out of a couple of old CE4's to bodge up new ones, seemed to do the trick.

So higher ohms = lower temp = not so good vape?

Im happy with the vape im getting, but the gunking and cleaning is doing my head in a bit. Think ill probably stick with the 1.8ohm coils for now.

Can you advise what size silica you'd recommend for the flavour wick? ive heard 2mm or 2x1mm. I was looking at some anyway for the above reason and also looking at recoiling but think for around £1/head and £2 for some wick, ill just buy a few and save the hastle of recoiling. Atleast then I know its done right and as I have no way of testing the resistance currently I could end up with anything! in time ill be recoiling though.

1 piece of 2mm or 2pieces of 1mm should do the trick.

as far as resistance checking goes you can get a multimeter from somewhere like maplins for under a tenner that will do the job, you can get dedicated resistance checkers, but probably the best bet is to get a mod that checks resistance for you as then you have a mod you can use as well.

thanks again VaperCaper I'm looking at mods, but to be honest the egos im using are doing the trick thus far and to save hassle, £1/head is nothing until I decide which mod I fancy when the egos have had their best day.

If you do get into doing your own coils mate. And your a tightwad like me, and try not to waste to much wick and wire. Your looking somewhere around 10p to redo an evod coil.
