Sup POTV,

So I decided to get some Ethyl Maltol from VRU to mix with some of their concentrates to hopefully get better quality finish. The EM is 10% diluted in PG. I was in a rush before I went out on Friday so didn’t really bother doing any research and just squirted in 1ml into 30ml liquids to see what would happen. The batches were:

1. Blackjack concentrate 20%, 3mg nic, EM solution 3% VG 77%

2. Jam on toast 14% Strawberry 6% 3mg nic, EM solution 3% VG 77%

So I started vaping the blackjack straight away the flavour was fine but I found it a bit rough on the inhale. My juices are normally real smooth but there is an unsatisfying coarseness to this somehow.

I tried the Jam on toast a couple of days later and the taste is spot on but again the same grainy inhale is present.

I’m not noticing any particular sweetness from the EM, am I doing something wrong? Is the EM making it harsh, have I put too much in? Does it need to steep longer? I normally shake and vape with VRU and they are fine.

Anyone got any tips here?

Many Thanks

Krang

Personally, I wouldn't use EM as a sweetener .... sucralose or stevia are sweeteners. EM has a candy floss flavour to it which is often used in very small amounts to make fruit flavours ping out, using too much can have a detrimental effect the other flavours ... it highlights some flavours and masks others or, if you add too much will bring that candy floss to the fore. It can work well in recipes like apple pie when you've got the flavours balanced but want the apple to come forward and the pastry crust to go back without adjusting the %.

Also, when using any additive like EM, citric acid, vanillin, magic mask, vape wizard etc., they're not shake and vape ... they'll need time to work their effect on the other flavours. I get a similar harshness to the one you're experiencing when using vanillin. It just makes me cough even after maturing.

My attitude to all these additives is to take care ... think about the effect you need on a recipe, start low and add until it gives the effect that you want. Be patient!

An alternative to adding sweeteners is to change the concentrate ... you could choose a sweeter strawberry for your jam on toast for example. My own strawberry is made from 5 flavours, 3 of them different strawberry concentrates, as none of them is quite right for me on its own. I add Honeydew Melon to flesh it out and a very little lemon for fruity zing.

... and 1 ml in 30 ml is 3.33%, which is very high indeed for EM. I once went as high as 0.5% EM and found it was too much. Each to their own taste however.

Thanks the comments guys.

Thing is it doesn't taste particularly sweet. The stuff I'm using is 10% EM in PG so the actual amount of EM I put in would be about 0.33% I think [emoji29]

No, that's full strength EM. That's just how it comes. It's actually an over-saturated concentration, so it was 3.33% you used. Best to buy it in crystal form as it's a lot cheaper. You can make loads of EM with a 10ml bottle-size of crystals.

OK nice one. I'll just try again with a lot less and see how it goes.
