I tried posting this earlier, but as I hit post, all my text and pictures disappeared as browser crashed, so this time it's all text with photos afterwards. Once bitten and all that.

Both my kanger giant and kanger mega are (were) unsafe to use on the 4nine without extra bodges. I used a spacer cut from an old credit card with a small magnet in the middle to be able to use my mega on a 4nine.

today I got a copper 26650 4nine, but the prospect of having to make another circle with a hole in for a magnet wasn't viable for two reasons, I didn't have another magnet small enough, but also, I couldn't be arsed doing it.

so, the problem. The centre pin on both the giant and mega are virtually flush with the 510 threading of the atty creating an instant short on the 4nine as both centre pin and 510 thread touch the positive connector of the battery and try to nuke the battery.

The fix (or fixes if you have suitable spares to hand) were relatively simple to achieve with a minimum of tools.

first I took the coil unit out of the tank base and pushed the 510 pin out (watch for the grommet trying to run and hide as invariably it follows the pin out). Disappointingly it's a very short pin. I still tried plan A though. Plan A being to add a rubber washer to the pin before putting it back to try and pad out the distance (not forgetting to put the grommet back in the base first). It looked like I might get away with this bodge. In fact I kind of did. It looked good, the rubber washer fitted fine. But unfortunately the washer was a little too thick and prevented the coil unit making contact in the base. On the stingray it worked fine as I was able to tighten things down enough for the washer to compress sufficient to make contact, but the 4nines magnet switch stymied that idea.

Next I trawled the spares box hoping I had a longer pin, but no. Not today matey. Damn. It was my preferred second option.

so the final solution came into play. Again the tank off, coil unit removed, pin removed but grommet left in place. A bit of tissue stuffed down from inside the base to plug the inner hole, along with a tiny bit from the battery connector side to prevent any filings or swarf getting where I didn't want it. A quick look at the pin shows the battery connector side of the pin to be a bit top hat like. It's only a millimetre or so thick (think drawing pin but with a really thick thumb press bit). With the grommet fitted firmly in place in the base you will see it's a virtually identical distance from the grommet to the outer thread edge as the thickness of the battery connecting point of the pin. Resulting in near identical lengths of pin and thread at the point they meet the battery.

so out came the file and sandpaper. I filed off a portion of the 510 thread/tube of the atty (half the width of the top hat), finishing off with fine sandpaper. With the grommet still being in the base it's very easy to see how much you are taking off the tube. All done by eye, no measuring here.

a quick clean of the base, all tissue removed and ready to carry on.

the pin was now put back. There was no change to the position of the pin by doing things this way so it doesn't wobble or cause any undue issues. with the excess tube length effectively sanded/cut back shorter, the central pin now stands proud of the 510 threaded collar.

Tank refitted to the base and ready to go.

I initially ran the 510 thread onto an old battery to make sure the threads were ok and needed no fettling before finally trying it on the new 4nine. No issues whatsoever. Worked perfect. Tried it on both 18xxx 4nines, no problem (no spacer needed either on those), in fact, no issues on any of my mods.

for anyone put off a hybrid type top cap like the 4nine or any other direct battery connector 510, this was the only way I could see to correct the potential risk the kangers were allowing. There is still shed loads of thread on the atty base (more than one of my old vivis in fact), so no issues involved in the mod and a relatively simple fix.

I will add a couple of pics after I post this just in case my browser crashes on me again. Nothing special in the pics, just how it now looks now the works done, but anyone with similar kit will see the difference. I hadn't intended doing a 'how to' so no before shots unfortunately, but the after shots show things clearly.

The giant now sits atop the 4nine working perfectly. I did still have to add a magnet, but that was a thin item and solely to shorten the button throw that I wasn't getting on with, but that has nothing to do with the atty mod, that was solely an additional personal preference tweak.

now, love the 26650 4nine, even more than the 18xxx 4nines, the larger surface area of the button with minimal movement suits me perfectly.

File and sandpaper did my nails and thumb no good at all, glad the tweaks worked.
