So i started trying to make my own juice, but as it happens every recipe i have tried (recipes from POTV) have tasted harsh and to be fair quite pissy if that makes sense. I have tried airing them, water baths along with steeping in hope they get better but no luck ..... so you my only option is to ask the apes what am i doing wrong?

I tried this recipe today after 1 week to get a feel and well lets just say the feel i got felt like troat rape. https://www.planetofthevapes.co.uk/e-liquid-recipes/strawberry-ice-cream.html

All my pg,vg, nic and concentrates have be bought and personally collected from chefs (awesome place i may add, 20 minute drive is worth it) but every recipe i have tried is harsh and not a good taste to follow. Minimum steep i have tried the juice at are 1 week shaking before and after work.

I was hoping to get something along the lines of strawberry whip from element or strawberry milkshake from milkshake man, just a candy type strawberry!

On hand i have left:
ripe strawberry-FA
Sweet strawberry-CAP
Vanilla bean ice cream-FA
Bavarian cream-FA

Also using 72 mg nic 100%vg base, batches made to be 6mg nic.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

That recipe that you've made looks fine. My first thought is that the nicotine is bad, to test it mix up just the nicotine at 6mg and no flavours, no need to steep just give it a really good shake.

Yep gonna have to say thats what it is tastes exactly the same as it did with flavours, i have just looked into this and it seems that it should be fairly clear but mines almost rusty in colour along with a fishy kind of smell. View attachment 106805

I had the same issue with my first attempt at making my own and ended up throwing away about 500ml,kept some to test if it needed steeping longer but even after 2 weeks it tasted the same if not worse, I used 72mg vg based from the Alchemist cupboard, I ordered the same 72mg vg based from DarkStar and some of my mixes where fine after 1 day

@RyanC21

The nic that I use is 72mg/ml (7.2%) VG based too and is a light rusty orange colour. I have never noticed a fishy smell but it definitely has a smell, maybe a kind of lightly burnt rubber kind of smell when neat.

Can I just ask how much you using to make 6mg? So, if you are making 100ml....how much nic base are you adding?

Also, what PG/VG ratio and what % of flavouring? Knowing this might mean we can pinpoint the cause of the harshness.

So if i were making 100ml it would be at 70/30vg pg as follows:

8.3 ml (8.3%) of base nic
61.7ml (61.7%) of vg
13ml (13%) of pg
Flavourings combine are 17% (all flavourings are pg based not to miss anything out)

Thanks for the help buddy!

Well your calculations all add up so that's great, and you're not using a particularly high percentage of flavouring so I can't see any issues with your recipe as it stands.

It could be a batch of bad nic, especially if it smells fishy, so I would eliminate that problem first. Try a batch with the new nicotine, start with something very simple and fruity (no cream/custard) as this should require very little steeping (if any) and test to see if you are still getting a harsh throat hit. If not, mix away. If you still have problems, come back and we will see if we can help further.

Your attachment doesn't seem to be showing correctly. If you're buying from the same vendor what you'll receive will likely come from the same batch and have the same problems as your current nicotine, If you can I'd switch it to PG based as all the problems with nicotine usually result from it being in a VG base. Also I'd take the bad nicotine back to where you purchased it from imo you'll be covered under the consumer rights act that what you've purchased is not fit for purpose. If you end up needing a new supplier Darkstar is probably the best place to get nicotine base, it is one of the cheapest and always seem to deliver quality nicotine.

I'm into my first stab at DIY'ing and your comment has me twitched as to why VG based nic has the potential to be less good than PG based nic.

Without giving it any real consideration, I opted for VG based nic when buying all the components. While I've not experienced any issue's with my first attempts, I'd like to know the reasoning for your statement to be able to make more informed buying decisions in the future....meanwhile I've close to 500ml of VG nic stored in the freezer - hope it doesn't cause me issue's further down the line!
