My two main concerns are airy draws and lack of throat hit. Both will make me feel like going back on the analogues again. All help/comments/advice gratefully appreciated.
Don't go for an eGo type anything I'd +1 the SVD kit
Ideally you want an SVD mod, 2 batteries for it and a decent charger for the batteries and some good clearomisers.
If you particularly dislike an airy draw then don't get a ProTank. Id also recommend a 510 Airflow controller to go with the mod as then you can get the draw down as much as you like it.
How much money is in the budget?
If you have a couple of hundred to play with then it's definitely worth getting a good quality atomiser to go with. the Kayfun or the Kayfun Lite+ both have adjustable draw built into them and are hands down the single best atomisers on the market right now and are only available from cloud9 vaping. One of those and a decent SVD kit will set you back about £200 altogether.
the next best thing right now is the Davide-S Aspire BDC which you can get for about £17 (Kayfun is more like £70-£120) if you get one of those then you want an airflow controller (£3) to go with.
Make sure the charger you get is XTar or NiteCore and make sure the batteries you get are EFest or AW IMR batteries and you can't go far wrong.
ProTanks are good but airy (fixable with an airflow controller) and ProTank 2's are better than ProTank 3's.
Make sure you go for a high nicotine content juice at least to start with 24mg should be fine and you'll have a reliable kit, a tight draw and a lot of throat hit all of which should get the gf off your back, at least about the smoking
