How can you update firmware with the mod wanting to charge?

Some mods update with the batteries in and some mods update with batteries out. With the batteries out the mod gets the power to update via the USB plugged into the computer. Check your manual for your specific mod.

I've updated a couple of mods, different brands have different instructions.
In all cases, remove the atty and batteries. The computer will detect it and you run the firmware.
You can plug your phone in, it will charge and you can transfer data. The USB can do power and data at the same time so I don't see the issue. The site will have instructions on the firmware page.

My new mod doesn't seem to power on when hooked up via USB without any batteries, neither the manual or website state whether it should but presumably batteries will need to be in the mod for the PC to see the device(nothing happens currently - i'll have to wait for the new batteries to charge).

I have only ever updated the wismec sinuous p80 and I had a battery in it when it updated...
Laptop did not detect mod with no battery in it..
