You don't need a definition of what a hero is, here's a picture of one:

This is a collection of mistakes I made during the course of wanting to "just fill it and go". You can't.

Apologies for some of the photos but I was tired, I got very frustrated, it was a camera phone and (most importantly) I ended up not giving a shit.

Step One

Don't leave the airholes blocked with Delrin - drill them out, all of them. You can always cover one or two with your hand when holding it, I find it tricky not to.

Step 2

Don't forget to clean out the air chamber and the drip tank of any manufacturing debris or Delrin you've just drilled out.

2013-10-09 02.08.34.jpg

Step 3

Don't use the original wick and coil, it's shit. Grab some 2mm, double it and wrap 4 coils of .2 A1 Kanthal.

Don't try to use thicker thread as a combined 4mm is a tight squeeze, as tight as you'd ever want. The next time I do it I'm going to keep 2mm as it is working really well.

You don't want to use this method to get the wick through that hole either - it was an unmitigated failure.

Step 4

Don't forget to remove the chrome plating from any point of contact where electricity needs to flow across: the base of the screw connection and the base of the switch.

2013-10-09 02.11.33.jpg 2013-10-09 02.16.24.jpg

The spring is stainless, you don't need to attack this.

2013-10-09 02.14.45.jpg

Step 5

Don't forget to check that everything on the top part of the body is tight, on mine it was all very loose, I had assumed otherwise and had to strip it again.

2013-10-09 02.12.15.jpg

Step 6

When you are tightening the top part up don't forget that the terminals will move. You don't want your positive terminal touching the negative, that is a 'bad thing'.

I found popping a pin between them maintained a perfect width and was easy to remove afterwards. This job, like everything in the process, was fiddly to begin with. You can see the resulting gap in the picture below.

But, mistakes made, I'm left wondering why I was so stupid and how simple it could be with knowledge.

Step 7

Fill the tank would be a ridiculous thing to do. No one would assemble an atty and forget this not even a tired, grumpy fat one.

Step oh I don't know there's been so bloody many

I got carried away with the assembly nonsense and trying to thread the wick.

2013-10-09 02.17.11.jpg

Which worked to a point.

2013-10-09 02.17.44.jpg

But by now I'd overlooked so many things I had to start from scratch.

I'd pulled the wick off and lost a pin, knocked it over and lost a pin, lost a pin in the process of losing a pin.

These pins are damn fiddly. They're tiny. This is not the mod for you if you don't have good hand-eye coordination and patience.

So I rebuilt a coil for the umpteenth time and tried it out before proceeding any further.

2013-10-09 02.18.55.jpg

Using it like this may be impractical but it is awesome. Have a go.

In this one you can see the pins fixing the coil into the terminals.

2013-10-09 02.19.40.jpg

Again, I used the wire to thread the wick through the air chamber.

2013-10-09 02.20.32.jpg

And yet again I ended up destroying everything and having to start from scratch again. In the process of pulling down with the wire I pulled the whole thing over, disconnected the coil and lost both pins.

So I adopted a new method - foil. Foil is brilliant, it worked as you pull on all threads evenly and can use it to compact them.

The final pictures were the home run and I'm bored of typing this now.

If it isn't obvious, which I think it should be, just ask :)

*** Cut the silica so it finishes just above the base of the tank ***

Fill with juice, screw on tank, vape.

I liked the look of the Hero so watched a video review of it and thought it looked like a right bloody awkward contraption. Is it worth the effort when you get it going?

I think it is a genuine Marmite of a product.

For those who like things to just simply 'work' then it really isn't for you. For those who like a little bit of tinkering in order to adapt it then you will be rewarded with flavour and vape, as I said in the review it is comparable with the Kayfun-Lite but just a bit less flavour and vape.

Where it wins over on the KFL for me is that it isn't an atty, it really is a true hybrid. A dinky little 18350 hybrid which demands a little bit of effort to get working well. Unlike the microcoil cotton drippers, this thing has gone through 15ml of banana custard without missing a beat.

What you will notice is that once you've used 2.5-3ml of juice the flavour starts to get muted as the wicking starts to struggle. No biggy, simply unscrew the tank and top up or tilt more when vaping. I've run the tank down to a mil before refilling with no real issues.

I guess the test for me would be to say would I buy it knowing the things I have experienced if I didn't have one? Yes, yes I would. Not just for the vape but also, if I'd had it on me last night, I'd have had no problems stealth vaping as it fits snugly and discretely into your palm.

If I had to get rid of either this or my Kayfun? If I suppose I have no other attys or mods bar one to power the KFL then it'd be a really close call but the KFL/mod would win. It wouldn't be my choice as my only higher end device although if someone were to attempt to take it away from me it'd be like trying to prise a gun from Charlton Heston.

These are (of course) very personal opinions. Sixty quid is a new Russian 91% and just a tenner shy of having a new KFL delivered to your door with a free chocolate. That money could buy you some serious clonage from the Far East or set you on your way to a Semovar.

My bottom line is that I enjoy it, found it frustrating at times but am pleased with the experience and what I learnt. I wouldn't part with it but Todd gave his away.

Marmite. Mmmmmomnomnomnom. :D

Good stuff. Sounds well worth it to you then. I have had in mind I want a hybrid for a while, thats why I looked at it. I will probs wait for a genesis hybrid I can afford and in the meantime I'm thinking of a fusionsmods hybrid adapter for my sigelei 8 and rsst. I did click on the review link on this thread to see what you though but there seems to be a problem with links to reviews; this morning anyway; I tried one on another thread which also didn't work.
