What's new

I'm new to coil building, it's working but i'm trying to understand more.

So i bought a couple of RDA's & some kanthal. Building twin coil set ups with cotton wool wicks.
My first coils were 5 evenly spaced wraps of 0.20 wire & i found that easy enough. Resistance measured 1.1 - 1.3 ohms.

Next i have wrapped my first micro coils. This time with 0.28 wire. After a few prototypes i clicked that 10 wraps got me above 1ohm. Actually i achieved the same 1.2 - 1.3 ohms.

I've been careful & have no desire to sub ohm, i just want a great vape & that's exactly why i went into rebuilding my own. Thing is though i'm either a bit thick or have some sort of numerical dyslexia & simple things like ohms law evade me. Not too helpful when i'm charging batteries every day & trying to achieve a safe vape.
Anyway, the coils are working & the vape is damn good , my batteries went from a day & a half to just 1 day between charges (1600mah 18500 in a mech mod) but i guess that these builds are more amp hungry than a clearo.

I'm just trying to aim toward my ideal build & work out what's gonna get me there, what's most efficient etc..

Tiz my first post in this section & for the record i will be looking through some threads here to see whats already been discussed but for now it's back to the new coils for some tirumisu from creative vapes.

I've always found micros to be the best coils (or nano) , probably down to the fact the coils are so close and when its a thicker wore (lower ohm per m) it takes more wire to get a higher ohm, so the coil is covering more of the wick.

I've also found that the wick itself makes a biiiig difference to the vape.

I've got dual micros on a kayfun now and with too little wick it was tasting burned. Too much and it was tasting burned.

Cotton is a very fine line to get right so it wicks the juice quick enough to keep up with the vape, but not so much it leaks

Thanks for the advice. I'm finding that the cotton wool is easy to overdo & a little thought & finesse is required. At the mo' i have it in a HELIOS clone & the posts are quite tall so i end up with quite a wad in there to tuck under itself & reach the well. Soaks up some serious juice.

Agreed. Its just trial and error. The upside is it's so easy to pull the wick out and have another go. My advice, use less than what looks right. It will swell up with juice

I'm with you vaposizer, I'm pretty new at coil building. There's just so many variables it's gonna take me a while to find that sweet spot - wire gauge, micro or not, wick material, resistance etc. At the mo I like microcoils in drippers so I can replace the cotton and change flavour quickly, in everything else I've got some with micro and some with normal coils and I like them both. I'm not convinced by dual coil setups yet, but I've only made one (and horses for courses and all that). My favourite at the mo is my iatty with silca and a normal 1.3 Ohm coil, it's on my vela clone in 18350 and it's my out and about device - it kicks like a mule lol

Oh and never dry burn it! The taste when it has been burnt is enough to put you off cotton for good. Always make sure its saturated.

I'm not finding the building difficult & my first micro's tonight are working so i guess it's not rocket science.Like you say though, those variables !
My mission is to get me a set up which is simple to maintain & the rda seems to me to be it. I went straight in for dual coil attys & figured that it's a good idea because i can have either a single or a duel in there. Two birds with one stone likey. I've been using them for about a week now & it has been so much less hassle than my clearos. It's looking to be a keeper but too early to tell yet. Like all things though ,it'll get easier with practice.
