is nicotine addiction real?

I often ponder the conundrum as to the best way for a vaper to lower their nicotine addiction/cravings/consumption and even if it's really worth thinking about.
Vape using lower nic strengths, or just cut back on the amount of juice vaped?
My gut feeling is that lowering nicotine but vaping loads isn't really the answer. "Oh I only vape 6mg juice now, used to vape 18mg" "great, how much juice do you get through in a day?" "Hmm about 10ml" - or - "I used to vape 8ml of 18mg juice a day" "How much do you vape now?" "Hmm, well it took me a while but I'm down to 4ml day now".
My overall feelings about vaping and nicotine is that there really is no need to have a conscious awareness of your nicotine and definitely no need to monitor it. Vape what you like, when you like, as often as you like, is good enough for me. Vaping finds it's own level.

It's interesting to note how the nicotine goal posts have moved over the last 3-4 years and it can not be a coincidence that lower strength e-liquids are, at the same time, cheaper to produce, and marketed as popular.

I'm trying to ditch the nic so my latest idea (I DIY my liquids) is to keep the stuff with nic (currently 6mg) unflavoured and my tasty mixes are nic-free. It seems to be working in that I more often that not reach for the tasty option ;) Will give it a few weeks and then reduce the nic in the utterly bland and boring liquid... I'm also planning a huge concentrates shopping spree so that I can keep things interesting and varied (plus it will keep my rather busy too!)

I've not read the article, instead i'll talk a little science.

Nicotine downregulates the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain, the brain becomes used to them being downregulated with the current supply of nicotine, so when you stop smoking, the brain isn't used to this sudden lack of nicotine, and slowly the receptors begin to upregulate again, but you'll suffer cravings until the receptors have bounced back.

Same thing happens with Gaba agonists, opioids etc, but their withdrawal syndromes are much more severe.

Nicotine addiction is real.
