Kanger Protank
Mini Review
Did a little group buy on this and managed to sneak in with the free postage, so the units cost $22 each (in P&P) direct from SZ Kanger. There was a complete balls up of the order etc – though to be fair to them when I pointed this out they said they’d ship fast via DHL and were good to their word.
The Package
I have had – (OK I didn’t have it but I bought it for my son) £200+ watches that haven’t come as beautifully packaged as this. It’s really classy. There’s a clear shrink wrap. Remove this and there’s a card banding with a hologram. Remove this and there’s a padded leatherette hard case with a proper metal hinge. Open the box and every part of the tank is inserted in its own space in a foam cut-out. There’s padded foam on the inside of the lid too - to stop any rattling or damage. This is good packaging – any more and it would be OTT, but it’s not – it’s like a top-end mod should be.
Inside the box there’s a simple card with a too small pictorial make up instruction on one side and recommended voltages against atomizer rating on the reverse. Of course, being a bloke, I didn't read this.
Hardware in the box includes:
· The tank
· The bottom piece
· 2 x atomizers
· A beautifully engineered Ego skirt for the tank.
The device
The tank itself is better looking in the flesh than on any of the publicity pictures – it oozes class and Kanger may have been very clever in this understatement. The lines flow and the finish is impeccable. This extends to the bottom of the device with its carefully sculpted air channels and the finely cut air holes in the 510 connector.
Assembly is simple – the atomizer head fits into the bottom ring which then screws into the bottom of the device. It’s like a bigger, posher T3 in this respect, though everything seems ultra durable – from the thick glass tank to that lovely mouthpiece. All the components fitted together in a highly engineered way and there were silicone gaskets on both the bottom fitting and the heads.
Filling is easy and is the same way as the T3 and MT3 – invert the device, fill taking care to avoid the centre tube, insert the bottom piece. Attach to a device. It looks wonderful on top of my Provari Mini – like they were designed for each other and everything is a fine fit. One bitch I have about Vivi Novas is that sometimes the 510 connection isn’t particularly well machined – not so on this Kanger Protank – the engineering is impeccable, the fit silky.
The Vape - first impression
So I filled with a juice I know, Capella Chocolate Fudge Brownie, slapped it on the Vamo at my regular wattage and vaped. It was noisy and a little airy though things settled down after the first tank full. I ploughed though a tank in two hours – which was a bit heavy – though very easy – this seemed to be an airy vape, though cool.
Vapour production is – good is an understatement – it excels. My first impression though was that it was airy and flavour wasn’t up to that of the T3.
User Error
Whilst vaping I idly glanced at that piece of card. My only ‘bitch’ with this kit was it came supplied with two atomizers and both read 2.5 Ohms. I would have liked something in the 1.5 to 1.8 range. Anyway this random reading got me puzzled as I appeared to be well out of the suggested voltage range for the coil(s) supplied. Yup I was well over. In fact I had been right up to 15 watts with this and it continued to provide a coolish vape, though at those extremes (and 6 volts on my IMotion) it was burning my juice. So I decided to heed the bit of card.
Pump Down The Volume
Heeding the card was a good decision. I am now vaping this at 7 watts. You may think “So what?” to that, but it’s a full 2.5 watts less than I tend to use for every other device. And – it is piling out stacks of vapour, but more importantly at the reduced wattage, all the flavour I was getting with the T3 is there with the Protank. Whatever Kanger have done in the design, it’s an efficient one. The draw is still slightly airy, but nowhere near as airy as an A7 or Biansi Imist. The flavour is what I’d like and the vape (on the 2.5 Ohm heads supplied) cool.
Overall
Overall this is a really classy product. I am looking forwards to trying the lower ohmage heads. These are also supposed to be rebuildable and that (space permitting) might be my route to that. I might block one of those air holes too but I can see why they are both there: on the Provari where there’s little space (it really does look the mutt’s on the Provari) the draw is tighter. It’s tighter on the Imotion too and with the tighter draw comes better flavour. It’s easy to see why, now, that beautiful plinth is supplied for Egos – not only does it look superb (if top heavy) but controls the air flow. It looks great on the (huge) IMotion2 too – though there’s something a bit Bilbo Baggins about the overall effect, whereas on the Provape product it’s class all round.
$22 (shipped) equates to £14.49 and for this package – that’s incredibly good value for money. Having sussed how to use this I am really happy with it. I might just get an Ego adapter out and try it with the skirt on the Vamo – on the Provari and IMotion it is superb; I got an Ego out and tried it on that and – superb too – on the Vamo it sits up a little too much and is a bit too airy.
