They seem to be thicker than the wraps that were on the bought batteries.

Where did you pick up the wraps Kev? I've always used Fogstar and they provide spares with every purchase but I've heard that you can also source wraps from them and all they ask is covering the postage!
 
I got them from ebay, I've recently heard that as well.

If you've ordered from Fogstar before and have an account, important as you have to log in to access the "repair centre" on the fogstar website, just have to pay postage
 
I think maybe its a heat thing, I had it on its hottest setting so it shrunk the plastic real quick and also so it was on the battery for a shorter time.

That happened because you left the wrap too long - didn't cut it down (enough).

The heat shrink tubing will only shrink by a certain amount.

So, leave it too long and it can't shrink enough give a smooth finish on the ends - you end up with creasing. Some shrink more than others depending on the material composition.

You only need 3-4mm 'overhang' past each end of the cell.
