How To Make the best cotton wick/coil set up for your dripper!

Currently rocking my favourite microcoil of 7/8 wraps of .3 Kanthal, mesh wick rubbed to get a cotton head and a tank of Vape Geek's Maximus as the glass keeps being refilled with cider.

Getting this set-up has been a real Level Up experience.

It's very hit and miss for me right now. I think one time I got a decent vape out of it and thought i'd cracked it but now its more or less every time i'm having a problem.

Using 0.25 wire, tried 4 wraps, then 5 and six. I'm not getting much taste or vapour, its actually quite a weak taste of the actual juice i'm getting and it somehow seems tainted, no matter what flavour I try its the same tainted taste and i'm convinced (and probably wrong) that its the cotton wool i'm using, which is 100% natural. I've boiled and dried the cotton wool. (basically threw a few balls of cotton wool into a pan of boiling water for a few minutes, drained and dried slowly in the oven.

I'm just pressing the coils together and not heating them etc and the screw i'm using is 2mm in diameter.

Anyone have any ideas?

OK this is driving me insane now. I'm using Johnson's baby cotton balls which says on the back of the packet '100% natural' but no matter what I do i'm getting the same sour taste from it, regardless of what juice I use. I'm convinced its the cotton. I've read that it should be unbleached etc but it says nothing like that on the packet.

Can someone please point me in the direction of a 'make' or brand of cotton wool, readily available in one of the big supermarkets or something which I can try?

I'm using tesco value cotton wool roll straight from the pack, no problems with flavour at all...

7 wraps of .25, round a 2.5 screwdriver shaft, you really need to squeeze and flame to set the coils really tight, but if you pulse without cotton in it should glow from the centre out once you get it hot all through let go of the switch and use fine tweezers to squeeze it before it cools to much and they should set nicely...

Thanks, i'll give that a go!

I found the most difficult part of this to be not making the coil, but getting the wick right. If the wick is too tight you get no vapour. You need only a really small amount of cotton wool. Fluff it up good at the ends too.

I'm using Wilkos cotton wool I think. For peace of mind, grab a different brand. But for now just stick to natural cotton wool balls so you don't complicate things. It absolutely should work as I can taste every tiny nuance in a bad set up, and pretty much was until I used cotton. The only time it DID taste funny was when:

- air flow wasn't correctly set up in relation to coil (some RDAs you'll move the hole, some, bottom air-holes for example, you'll just have to push the coil closer to the hole)
- cotton was packed in too tight

Oh and when I tried a micro coil (pushing the coils together). This never worked for me. Works for everyone else, but try a normally spaced coil, around 4-5 wraps for 1.5-2 ohms.
