Mosfets easier:D

Is there anything inherently wrong with my idea or is just that its a couple of bits of extra soldering?

Do I need fuses either way?

This is how to connect up a mosfet, they sound complex but they are basically an electronic "relay" where the power "turns on" a silicon switch, this requires very very little power & the silicon switch can be "over-engineered" to 80-110 amps (or whatever your required current is) thus allowing microscopic switches to be used to power up massive current draws.

On one site, the modder had arranged a "fingerprint" type switch, that just required the skins resistance to act like the switch contacts to operate the mosfet.I was tempted to try the same, then remembered that when younger I couldn't get an electric shock easily so it would be quite difficult to recreate a system similar without a heap more electrical knowledge than my "country bumpkin" brain would provide. :P

is the 15k resistor a constant or do i need to work out what one i need depending on batteries/ current etc?
And do you know if fuses are absolutely essential or can I just leave them out? (There aren't any in my mech mods so I'm guessing not essential just more of an added safety feature)

I have 2 box mods with 4 lipo cells within, neither have a fuse.I have experienced what occurs when a short is created(melted insulator in the RDA)and there was zero drama, all that happened was my mosfet died with a barely audible crack.

The 15K resistor needs no calculation for different cells,I've used some "recycled" resistors extracted from the PCB from an old PSU and they were of varying value, from about 10K to a 25K & worked just as well, though I now have some brand new 15K resistors in "stock" (actually,my desk drawer :P )

cheers for the help, will just buy some fuses when i get the mosfet, think that site with the 510 had 110A mosfets and resistors and vandal switches so that should be simple to put one big order together :)

will definitely make life easier without fuses, I've hard shorted 2 batteries now and was able to safely rectify the situation in both occasions before any venting or worse occurred, an like you say - things just start melting lol, plus it will be easier to get batteries out of a magnetic box compared to unscrewing a tube mod like the other times :grin2:

Think Seedy has the complete kit,510/mosfet/switches/resistors @ ModMaker.co.uk

I did have some mosfets before some greedy bugger bought them all @Chegs ;)
Some more on the way ;)

yea just noticed they were out of stock, any idea on an eta?
Should i wait for them to be in stock or just put my order through now or wont it let me?

I don't mind if you don't send the whole order out till they are in as have to wait for and find a few other bits and bobs first anyways

No idea who you're talking about, I haven't got many as I keep blowing them when experimenting.
