Need Something New...

Out of curiosity, is there a point to constructing weird and wonderful coils like that other than the fact they look really funky?

Erm...

Thats the only reason im considering doing it lol, I can imagine it does have an advantage. Why? I don't know lol

I am seriously new to coil building, I have rebuilt the head in my aerotank, but other than that nada. I have got a tobh style on it's way from Fasttech and so I am lookin to get to grips with the theory behind coil building. I think the key factors are juice supply, airflow and surface area of the coil. I can see how that particular coil would have some interesting airflow characteristics. Sometimes it is just easier to learn the principles by looking at extreme examples so I would love to hear some insights if you are willing.

Simply forget everything in theory, get yourself some kanthal a small screwdriver and some heat.

And just go for building it with tight coils, you're more likely I find better off learning by doing.

However yes your correct airflow, surface area and wicking is important imo your better off just learning by doing and checking your ohms.

Theres much more experienced coil builders here than I though :-)

I am one of those that naturally learns by reading stuff, so forums are great for me lol. Plus I have to await the slow boat from China, and even if that turns up in record time I can't afford the batteries until the end of the month lol, so I am just amusing my self in the mean time trying to understand the underlying principles :)

Fair enough :-P im a kinetic learner so I learn by doing ok...

Firstly read up on gauges of wire I personally find 28g wire is good for me (crazywirecompany.com)

Secondly you want basic tools for coiling
-Little blue screwdriver (comes with most FT RDAs)
-Lighter / Torch (Heating up the wire before coiling makes it easier to work with)
-Pliers (To hold the wire with whilst torching)
-Nail Clippers (Cutting wire to coil and trimming excess)

Once ive torched my wire I grab the screwdriver and I wrap 10 wraps of 28g around the screwdriver making sure they are as close as possible without overlapping each other. This should give you 1.4ohms around 0.14ohm per wrap. I do dual coils therefore 2 1.4 coils makes a 0.7 build.

With it still on the screwdriver I position the coil and thread the legs through the posts so it doesn't move and go on the piss.

Tighten down the screws, cut the excess off with the clippers.

And add wick I use organic cotton what you wick with is your choice, personal taste yadda yadda.

Try not to have the wick bunched up on the outside of the coils as it will cool them down meaning less vapor, have it freely.

Erm yeah. Basic coil tbh

That's helpful thankyou, particularly the bit about not bunching up the wick, it makes sense, but it wouldn't have been my natural instinct

No problem mate :-)

I never thought about it myself until Raguri mentioned it in a thread about sub ohming / cloud chasing. The credit really must go to him for the wick bit.

If your coils dont go right at first don't worry you'll find you use alot of extra wire to begin with, if you have a perfect coil first time round ill hunt you down, tape you to a chair and have you become a coiling factory lol.

Just have fun, enjoy it.

Tis true. Also, that ruyon or w.e it is is CRAP for clouds. And tastes like death. Another raguri tip.

Thank you, that would be really helpful if I knew what they were :D more research needed LOL
