Deffo try rubber grips before breaking out the hard tools. You can get sheets of rubber in various thicknesses & sizes on ebay, very handy stuff & lasts forever. The rubber glove trick often wins too. is it ss ?

I did try using a cloth between the mod and the mole grips (which weren't locked on). Rubber sheet / gloves sounds like a plan though.

I assume all's well now then. It's agood idea to not hoof those tube mods together too hard really. Sound like i'm stating the obvious but y' know, had the odd similar issue with some before. On the upside, atmo' do stock spares as a last resort.
