New Coil, Hits Harsh, Hurts Lungs

To start off, I'm not super experienced with vaping. I've done it on and off for a few years now, but something always happens to my mods that makes the whole experience super unpleasant after a while, and now matter how hard I look into it, I can never seem to find the exact right answer about what I'm doing wrong. But when it's good, it's great, and I want to figure out what the problem is so I can do it consistently.
So I've had this mod for a while, it's a Jaybo something-or-other (not sure the exact model, it was a hand-me-down gift from a friend, but still in great condition) and when I first started using it, it was a blast. Right off the bat, I could take huge puffs and produce massive clouds, but after a while it started getting harsh, which I understand is generally related to the coil. But even after changing the coil and getting new fluid, it's always either a little bit harsh, or EXTREMELY harsh. This last time, I stopped vaping for probably like 5 months or so, so the mod itself was just sitting around with old fluid saturating into an old coil. So today I went and got 2 new coils, brought them home, disassembled the tank and cleaned it thoroughly, put in juice, let it sit for a few minutes to fully saturate the coil, and as soon as I take a puff, it's UNGODLY harsh. Thought maybe I started it on too high of a wattage (50 w), so turned it down to 30. Took another puff, and even though I barely got any vapor, it still just hurt. Turned it down again, same result. Like every time, it just makes it a little bit hard to take a breath for the first couple breaths afterward.
What am I doing wrong? It's driving me crazy, I used to love this thing and now it just hurts and tastes awful.

What is the coil, and what strength nic are you vaping?
Welcome to the forum.

This seems to be similar to my problem.

I vaped for four months and really loved it. I went back to smoking and this time round every time I try to vape it's not very pleasant at all. As you say it is really harsh.

Some people vape/smoke/vape/smoke no issue so why can't we?

Maybe the only answer is to buy new equipment, new liquid and persevere. I only joined last night so I'm no expert but just a thought.

Starting at 50w is you've burnt the coil out already.

Prime coil first. Drip juice on cotton all around coil then screw it into base of tank. Fill up and start low. Of you vape at 59w then start at 20w. Even if you get nothing out of it at 20w it's warming the coil. Then turn up a few watt each few puffs until you get to your sweet spot.
Start high and it's buggered before it's begun so them turning down is too late.

Then of it's still harsh it's either naff coul, naff juice or naff nicotine.

MrDj you are a font of knowledge.

I bought one of those box things and as soon as I used it I found it tasted burnt. I thought I had blown the thing up and was scared to switch it back on so I binned it.

I wish I had known about the temperature being too high back then. Joining here is the best thing I have done .

Well I have had almost 4 years practice [emoji16]
Only a few months ago I was stumped and ready to chuck everything out of the window when I tried DIY for the first time. Now I can do it with my eyes shut.
Hang around here for a bit and you will soon pick up all the tips you will need but always ask questions before you try something for the first time.

Somethings incompatible somewhere.
Either the pg/vg ratio is not suitable for tank or vaping style or the nic strength is too high for vaping style or tank.
Could also be a combo of both.

First, I want to say thanks to everybody for all your input and concern, it's nice to get so many responses in such a short time!
Now then,

Yep yep, this was definitely the issue. I feel like an idiot, this seems like it should be really obvious in retrospect.
Thank you for the help! I started it waaay low (9 w), then slowly worked up to 40 w, and now it's hitting beautifully at 65 w.
I'm sure I'll run into more issues later, but that's a huge help for starting out!
Thanks again, dude!
