Really need your help!

Hi guys, thanks for all of your suggestions!

Been advised by V101 (good and very fast support!) to couple the dead rabbit with a DotMod DotBox 100w Mod....all set I think, wish me luck :)

Bob
Good luck, seeing that you are MTL vaping, I`d have suggested a single cell mod then you`d cover your needs with 2 batteries and save a few bob but the 100w box will stand you in good stead if you decide you`d like to try a more steamy vape.

Hi @BobbyT and welcome

It might be worth trying BP mods' pro-cotton if you're starting out. It's well convenient in that shoestring format, and they give you just the right amount to fit snugly into a 2.5mm coil (there is a 3.0 version too I think).

I'd also recommend a coiling kit that contains a coil jig, like this one:

With one of those suckers, coiling is the easy bit (after a few goes). Getting the wick right is the begginer's challenge IMHO.

Update - Well, required items arrived yesterday and within 30 minutes I'd made my very first coil....whoo hoo! :)

Not saying it's a work of art but hey, it works!

Lessons learned......

Get a coil jig as mentioned above by @MHL (arriving today), 28ga wire is finnicky!

Return this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07CNVYYKG?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title cos it's very cheaply made (battery cover falls off) and I can achieve the same with the mod

Get a decent pair of scissors (the ones in the kit are terrible)

....two small issues, firstly, I aimed for 8 wraps to get somewhere near 0.8ohms but must have missed a wrap because it came out at 1.62ohms! (?)

and secondly, there's a one second delay after pressing the fire button and getting a puff. Subsequent puffs (within a few seconds of the first puff) are instant. Can only imagine it's my less than perfect coil build?

No matter, I think I can fix the first issue and live with the second (it may improve when I get more accomplished)

So, vaping with this at 10W (I like a soft draw) it's at least as good as the commercial coils I was being ripped off with!!

I call this a win! And it's all thanks to the great advice I received here.....many thanks again guys, what a great community :)

Now to terrorise the DIY juice thread in order to try and rehash my old and tired recipe.

All the best
Bob

Hi Bob

Not sure what's causing the delay, might be the build, might be the wire.

For the first issue I'd recommend either less wraps or you could try using a thicker wire. 26awg would likely get you nearer to the 0.8ohms you're aiming for. There's also the option to go for a different wire type. I like Nichrome wire, it's nickel based but you can still use it in wattage mode. It ramps up quicker and you can get lower ohms with more wraps.

Just couple of suggestions. If you like what you're getting already then there might not be a need for you to change it.

Nice work

FWIW, I use just 4 wraps of 28/29awg kanthal and it comes out at about an ohm. I expect the delay is the time it takes for the wire to warm up, on the first fire from cold, so it's probably too much wire (either too many wraps, or too thick). This is more apparent when you're doing mtl builds because we only fire at about 10w.

Sadly all in one kits tend to be a bit shit... in one dept or another. I got this, which wasn't cheap, but even then I had to replace the scissors, because they were too stiff. My pet hate is fold up scissors. Who the hell designs these things?

The type of scissors that I use and would recommend are sold in angling supply shops and are intended for cutting ceramic thread, one arm of the blade is serrated so they hold the fibres, they can be a bit expensive but you get what you pay for, mine are at least 20 years old ans still sharp as fcuk.

Sounds like you did well with your first build.

What wire type are you using? Missing a wrap wouldn't account for 0.8ohm coming out at 1.68.
