What's new

New Covid strain spreading across the UK that's less likely to cause symptoms

so is this different than the r rate they were talking about, that’s based on the proportion of infected people?
The r rate the is reported in the media is the current transmission rate in the community. If everyone stayed home and stayed in separate rooms the transmission rate would drop to zero because no one is infecting anyone. The R rate (R0 or R naught) is the transmission rate in the open population, i.e. without any attempt to stop transmission. It is the average number of people that will contract the disease from one person with the disease, and is used to demonstrate how contagious an infection is.

The r rate is brought down by the interventions such as mask wearing, but that doesn't impact how contagious the virus is, just it's opportunities to infect. The virus still has the same R0 rate.

The original Covid variant was about R0 3.

That's how I understand it. Willing to be corrected.

No not all, just don't expect to have any energy again, post covid.
Sorry, that wasn't about the Covid variant, just the state of things in general. Thought I'd throw it in just to cheer everyone up. bandance.gif

Although, the possible increase of reinfection doesn't sound great.

i reckon in the near future they’ll be working on new improved vaccines to target this and potentially other variants that will elude the current ones.

That's the beauty of the way the vaccines are made. They can be easily modified to cater for new variants (and potentially other diseases eventually). Just means we're going to be getting jabs for a long long time.
