Hello Peoples,

So after the negativity around Aspire's coils flaking, something I have experienced myself on Nautilus & Atlantis tanks I decided to jump and try a RBA, decided to go for the Kayfun v4, which I got from cloud9vape along with most spares, etc. I bought some premade coils on 24 gauge 0.5 ohms. Destroyed 3 coils before I managed to get my first coils installed, wicked via koh gen do (KFD) japanese cotton. All installed, wicked and vaping nice. Problems:

1. I seriously thought the coil building would be the biggest problem. Its not, for me the problem is installing the coil itself. Premade coils came with short legs, I have some chunky thick gorilla hands so had to use a pair of pliers to help me out, even then it was not as good as it should be.
2. I want to make my own coils. Looking for 0.5 ohms and would like to know what gauge wire to use? Something with several 5+ wraps would be nice. Diameter wise, I have 2.4mm so something with 2.4mm diameter would be ideal. Please also recommend a website I can buy the materials from please - UK.
3. I bought ohm tested from cloud9vape but does not detect subohm builds. Anyone got any recommendations for a subohm tester from a UK site?
4. Can a kayfun v4 user give me an idea on how often to change the wick and coils? I know its subjective but seriously, I heard that crap with the Aspire coils with people mentioned 7days plus, I have super sweet liquids like G2vapours Gillian's island and rutheless vapors ed duz it on ice so only get 2-3 days of use on a nautilus and atlantis tanks, around 15-20mls on average before the flavor fails. Some indication would be nice. I will wick it again on Sunday night and see how it goes, I am hoping I can get few days like the aspire coils.
5. Can you please comment on what gauges I would need to cold, warm and hot vapes for 0.5ohms?

My view on the kayfun v4 so far.
1. From the pictures is looked like any other tank, in use, I understand why they charge £120+ and people pay it. It really is very well made.
2. Top filling in practice is so simple is kind of sickening to think why no one else does it this well?
3. Installing the 4S kits was quite easy and simple.
4. This thing drinks liquid and has a small tank but when refilling is so clean and simple I am cool with it, got some metal needle top bottles for refilling on the go.
5. Liquid feed is quite good, only got dry hits when I went a bit crazy on the watts testing things, on 0.5ohm at 21watts to 25watts, no complaints.
6. Most important thing that hit me...the taste of the liquid is - consistent. I mean it gives you the same flavor and hit consecutively on each hit. Very nice.
7. Tank might be small but this is a tall tank.
8. Being able to close the liquid feed chamber when on the go is actually very reassuring, you know it would leak all over the place, still I keep it my mod in a plastic sleeve, put it down to the numerous times I've had tanks leak on me while eeeking out the last moments of coil life or owning kanger subtanks (8+ leaked on me).
9. Someone has got to create a bigger tank for this, full 5ml tank would be like really nice.
10. Am I the only one who thinks the liquid feel holes look like submarine torpedo tunnels, expect a starwars laser cannon to fire out a shot when I notice them:read:

First, you'll need to get something with a smaller diameter if you want to coil at 0.5 ohm, otherwise you'll be up to 0.5mm Kanthal and the vape will be too harsh.

I'd suggest 0.3 around 1.8, 4 wraps giving you 0.7 ohms. Take a look at this calculator: Coil wrapping | Steam Engine | free vaping calculators

As the wick is easy to get to, I would change it about every 3 or 4 tanks, around 10 ml, dry burning the coil each time. Change the coil every 3rd time you change a wick.

For wick and cotton, try a sampler pack of Kanthal from Stealthvape and also pick up a free sample of Muji. You can then order larger amounts once you have a preference.

Ment...happy to experiment. Will look into it, I am guessing this is on 28G kanthal wire? Will play with the calc.

As the wick is easy to get to, I would change it about every 3 or 4 tanks, around 10 ml, dry burning the coil each time. Change the coil every 3rd time you change a wick.

Advice above sounds very logical and sensible, meaning it seems like good advice. I'll follow this and see how it goes.

Thank you very much M - you are more than a man...you are legend:yahoo:

You haven't mentioned what device you're using but I'm guessing it's Regulated device as you mention changing the wattage...

If you're using regulated then it's not always neccesary to go to sub ohm to get a good vape. somewhere around the 1 ohm region will work really well on a K4, particularly using 0.25mm wire around a 2.5mm former. It's not neccesary to change your coil too often as long as you keep it clean and don't deform it when wicking there is no reason a well made Kanthal coil shouldn't last for two weeks or so. I'm currently running a Nickel coil in a K4 thats been in place for over three weeks and shows no signs of damage.

Fitting coils should be reasonable easy, remember to remove the congestion ring around the build deck and keep the former in the coil while you fit it to ensure it keeps it's shape. once you've screwed the connections dow tightly you can then use the former to adjust coil position and height before putting in the wick.

I change wicks every three to 4 tanks for liquids that blacken the wicks quickly but you'll find your own path on that as you go along - it really depends on the drop off in flavour as to when you change the wick.

Dont forget to look at the steam engine calculator and use it to match your devices "sweet spot" with the coil you build that way you can get the most out of a regulated device. Stem engine will also give info on coil sizes wire sizes and battery capacities wich will reduce the amount of trial and error involved in getting the best vape.

Finally I'd suggest going to a Vape meet in your area if you can, you'll get to meet other vapers and pick up lots of useful hints and tricks as well as having a good night out...:2thumbsup:
