Old Goat bottom feeder mod.
Bought direct from US vendor $25.
Oh gushy, gushy gushy enthusiastic liking. This is a lovely little bit of kit and – easy to use. The vape quality is – fabulous. OK I am only getting a standard 3.7 volts, but with a standard atomizer, this is a flavour monster. It is direct dripping without the faffing around.
Size an issue? In the pic - black Lavatube,
TTS, Clearomizer thingie and the Old Goat
- complete with atomizer and drip tip.
Clever
This is like… the not quite geeky kid, who is quiet at school, and then, when the know-all, show-off geeks have flounced all their knowledge in a braggardly way, trounces everyone in exams. It doesn’t look too clever, but it is.
To start with, that button looks too big and in the wrong place, it is neither. This is the ‘deluxe’ model – there is a version with a prettier, very small micro button ($20), but it won’t deliver the 5 amps that the accessible horn push will.
More Cleverness
So, open it up and you see a bit more cleverness – everything is packaged into the box so deftly. Start to load it with juice and – it is a much easier process than the Phideas ( a far more beauteous and expensive device than this). How much does the bottle hold? I don’t know, but it came with a spare bottle, and top with needle. Enough..2ml? 3 maybe…. And I suspect the cleverness extends to matching that with the 700 mah 14500 3.7 volt battery.
14500 battery and juice bottle
in parallel harmony
Filling was easy (You must unscrew any atomizer or cartomizer whilst doing this or needles will bend), as was getting the needle through the bottom of the 510 connector. This needle was a tight but comfortable fit into one of the Standard 510 atomizers that Vapourhut sell and recommend for bottom feeders. I chucked a few drops into this brand new atomizer, fitted a drip tip and…
Firing up and using
… Switched the Old Goat on. Yup, it has a separate on-off switch. A big plus for that, especially with that big horn push. I dry burnt and then, squeezed the bottle a little and vaped.
Oh yum, yum, nom, nom, nom. All the flavour of direct dripping. I couldn’t believe how much taste I was getting out of this little thing. I continued to use it: it fits neatly into the hand and on the small space around my laptop. I had ample room on the shelf it lives on for it AND a coffee. Its compactness and ability to stand on its base has introduced some … luxury.
In the pic from the top - pink 510 atomizer, black drip well,
squonching hole, hornpush button and on-off slide switch.
Oh - and my finger.
Afternoon
I vaped this all afternoon and well into the evening – heavy vaping. It was at the end of this that I realised why this thing has two ‘squonching’ holes in the case. A more robust squeeze of the bottle is needed when it is about a 3rd full downwards. Good design again. and it got me all the way down to the last few dregs in the bottle (Mme Pixiejuice’s Brandy vape). There was battery power to spare and – being a little battery, which fits into my Trustfire charger, recharge times are quick.
The blue light? Hmmmm – but it would certainly show you how much juice you had left on a dark night. So it’s excusable on functionality and – blue LEDs are the cheapest.
Put on a pair of stained jim-jams and slip down to
Tesco's for a bottle of Lambrinni with the chav light.
I had to switch the camera flash and lights off to get
this pic - in real life it's not that obvious - thankfully.
When I’d finished vaping I took the bottle out rinsed and dried it. I tried Puros and it didn’t cut it – but I like Puros at about 4.2 – 4.7v with an SR or Imist atomizer so I decanted and filled with Caramel Cream. In the process I evaluated the little hand controller/battery box case. It’s quite a thick material – I suspect quite durable. The rounded corners on the exterior are hardly noticeable or revolutionary, but aid comfort. I was laying into the Caramel Cream and then realised I had vaped rather a lot; the Old Goat is so effortless - so took a break.
Simples..
I seemed to get the knack of how much to squeeze the bottle and how often quite well; examination of the neat built in drip well and 510 connector showed no excess juice. This was so easy to use I soon didn’t think about it, what was always apparent was the copious load of flavour – of a quality you only get direct dripping.
The opposition
So how does it stack up? I have the beautiful Phideas, which I am longing to use, which takes an 18650 battery and is more difficult to fill -.and am still in search of the big bottom hole (it had to come in somewhere) atomizers to use with it.
I have a Boge Revolution V2 – on the way – which has an integrated 700 mah battery (same power as on the smaller Old Goat – but Old Goat’s are straightforward 14500 rechargeables and good quality cheapies can be got from the Scotsman on EBay) and reputation for tank like build quality. This is coming with 5 free cartos and – that makes me suspicious that it too has a too big a syringe and needs big bottom atomizers - Boge.
I won’t use any of these with cartomizers, though I have tried the beautiful Phideas Woody with one. I want flavour, not cartos. When I have all 3 running I will do a comparative review.
On its own
So how does it stack up on its own? It is built and designed by someone who is passionate about making them. It is built to be cheap and at $25 is a bargain. It’s built to be used and it is more useable than most things – it will fit comfortably into a shirt pocket. It takes the faffing out of direct dripping – it makes things so easy. If someone said to me “I am not really interested in huge throat-hit, I want top flavour” I’d probably suggest they try one of these.
Botttom Feeder Bummers
There is of course one snag with all bottom feeding vaping devices. Flavour changes: Old Goat was supplied with 2 bottles, which helps, but if you want to change on a frequent basis, you’re either going to need to find complimentary flavours that don’t taint, or wahs your atomizer, the bottle, needle and feed tube. This latter bit is easier than it sounds, and this is common to all bottom feeding devices, just as it is to tanks.
If you use cartomizers, you may have the option of using one for each flavour: I don’t. In my little mind it would be heresy to use a cartomizer on this – like buying a Bugatti Veyron and only using it to drive granny to the shops a metropolitan mile away,
Conviction
This has convinced me. My second (and maybe third) DIY box mod will be a bottom feeder. The flip top metal fag case design I almost finished, holds no interest any more. I want something like this – with a big battery and one of Ethel King’s variable voltage boards. It’s had that big an impact. And I’ll be building something for my youngest son too – maybe in a carbon wrap – it could be funky.
Conclusion
This is an obvious stealth-vape candidate. This is pocketable, this functions superbly. This is affordable. I wish someone had put one of these in my hand just after I tried my first look-alike. Me likes – what a great well designed useable bit of kit, small and punching successfully way above its weight.
Since I got it, I haven’t stopped using it. It lives on my tiny desk. OK if you want big voltages, it won’t deliver, but if you want more watts, use a lower ohmage atomizer. A brilliant little thing.
