I built a 3mm coil and used the steam sandwich method for wicking the silica. That was really fiddly and ended up with the same results. To be honest I didn't notice much difference between silica and cotton wool.
Made several more coils and tried different wick thicknesses, similar results.
Weirdly the veritas seems to have gotten worse. Now it has a metallic and almost burnt rubber taste at times. I got so many dry type hits yesterday it was horrendous. I took the two top screws off the positive post and checked that plastic bit underneath (insulator?) and that didn't seem burnt. I took the screw out the 510 connection and checked the oring there and it looked fine to my eyes. I replaced it anyway. I did notice black 'dirt' or whatever on the 510 connection, almost oily. I dunno what caused that though as the oring 'seemed' ok. I've never noticed it previously.
Starting to wonder if that's where the problem is, something to do with the 510 connection or with the center post screw. Does it matter how far out the 510 connection is? I tried unscrewing it more, screwing it further in closer to the oring. I've cleaned out the veritas thoroughly twice with everything taken apart since I got it, so I can't see how this can be residue machine oil as everything looked clean.
Gawd dammit why can't it just work.
