Firstly, Happy Christmas and all that. :)

I am brand new to rebuildables and bought a Sapor RTA and a Tsunami RDA. (At the moment I'm using them on a cool fire iv TC 100)

The first coil I've built is with kanthal 26AWG, 3mm and 6 wraps. My target resistance was 0.4 and it's measuring 0.41. It glows from the inside out although it definitely doesn't look as neat as some I've seen.

The trouble is it's spitting, popping and cracking something terrible. I watched quite a few YouTube videos about making coils and wicking but I'm still not sure about wicking. Yesterday I tried adding more cotton and that's definitely improved it. But I think it could be better.

I tried rolling the cotton, it is moveable but snug and just tucking it inside the retainer ring. I made the mistake the first time I filled it of not closing off the juice flow holes but I cleaned it out the second time.

I'm guessing a lot will be practise and experience but I wondered if there were any tips anyone could give. Does it sound like I need more cotton? More in the well or is just tucked inside the retainer ring the right way to go?

I turned down the wattage to 25 as that seemed to help. I'm not sure what other info to add so sorry if I've missed something.

On the Tsunami I used 4mm, 24 AWG with 9 wraps for 0.5 ohms and I found it easier to get the cotton in. That seems much better but still a little bit crackly.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, even if you think my coils sound wrong or could be better.

Thank you :)

Crackling can happen if the juice or any part of the atomizer or wick contains water like after cleaning. It's not really an issue and tends to go away. Some people actually add distilled water to the juice to make it crackle because it feels homely.

That makes sense, but I didn't use water. I just wiped it all dry with tissue. Thank you though :)

I would say practice on the rda, they're a little more forgiving than tanks and you'll get a feel for the amount of cotton the coil needs, once you have that vaping nicely move on to the rta and adjust cotton length to suit, keeping the fatness of the cotton you use similar to what works well in the rda.

Not used a sapor, but looking at pics it appears to have fairly large wicking holes, so will probably want a fair length of cotton to stuff into the holes to stop it leaking. It wants to be loose enough that the juice can wick, but tight enough to prevent it leaking.

My personal preference is to use as little cotton as possible in an rda, so I cut it pretty short and at an angle so as I stuff it down into the deck it literally just touches the bottom.

When wicking the rda you want a small amount of resistance pulling the cotton through the coils, no resistance is going to be too loose, but if as you pull it through you see the coil legs being pulled across aswell then it's too tight.

I would think 0.4 ohms kanthal in an rda is going to want at least 45w+ to run properly, but that's pretty subjective, so what works for me might not be what you're after. Start low and work up to where you like it and get the best flavour from your juice.

Ok that's really helpful thank you. It seems with wicking it's sort of like goldilocks...not too much...not too little. I think practise will really help.

I'll try and higher wattage with the rda and see how I get on. Thanks again :)
