I was just sitting down with a cuppa with the news on in the background when sky ran a feature about the latest shock tactic ad to hit the screens (yawn!). Then they had a gp who runs stop smoking surgeries. At first it was the usual "go see your gp, pharma products are great" blah blah... Then the presenter said "and what about these ecigarrettes?". Ok, suddenly my attention was caught :) I was expecting the official line to be trotted out and engaged my scornful, enraged switch ready to shout down the tv, so imagine my surprise when the dr talked sense, well mostly. First he pointed out that ecig users are not smoking, they inhale vapour and so they are vaping! Then he said that ecigs don't contain any of the toxins associated with smoking, nicotine is harmless and whilst the long term effects are unknown, they are definately less harmful than smoking! He also said people don't want to feel forced to quit and whilst vaping is "unconventional" in its quitting method, it works! It breaks the cycle of going to the shops to buy tobacco (plus the other associated habits in the ritual of smoking) and at the end of the day it doesn't matter how people quit, the important thing is just that they succeed! Finally he said that more and more quit drs are suggesting vaping as a tool for quitting smoking and people should talk it over with their gp (not so sure about that bit of advice as it depends on the dr in charge).
extremely positive, which was even more surprising coming from something on sky! I just wish I'd caught the name of the dr to give him the respect he deserved :)

My Dr fully supports vaping and any new mods I get between visits(every 6 months) I have to take in to show Him, He has even taken pics on his mobile of a couple to show others, dont know if that was patients or Dr's tho. When I first showed Him how I'd given up after trying everything from the NHS He did check it out online before sayin well done, even got me to vape so He could smell the exhale vapour in His room

Yeh I caught the end o that thought the Dr made a lot o sense missed his name too. At least our side is makin the mainstream

My Dr was happy for me when I told him I'd finally quit smoking, and has an interest in my gear...seems to like the Afro-Dizziac the best atm.

I never get to see the same doctor twice in a row. Over the last year, I've seen four. Each time, I tell them I've stopped smoking, and they're all "that's great! wonderful!". Then I brandish whatever vaping device I happen to be carrying that day. The reaction to that varies considerably, and is very revealing. One spoke about recommending them to other smokers. What I found strange was that none of them had actually seen a vaping device before, none of them knew what was in them or how they worked.

The most recent one was particularly revealing. He was quite positive about vaping, but when I raised the prospect of the ban, and how e-cigs are disrupting some very powerful vested interests, he was all, "Oh yes, the tobacco industry" - but it hadn't occured to him to consider the role of the pharmacos, or the implications for the state.

I caught most of the article and was pleasantly surprised by the Dr's attitude. I was definitely expecting the "Vaping is bad, M'kay" approach so it was nice to see a positive attitude on such a mainstream broadcast.
