Hi all.

Am new to mixing and have had a craving for a custard for a while. Have decided to mix my own with a few other flavours.

I have a question about Steeping ... now say im mixing 30ml plain custard from concentrate in a bottle.

Would the steeping process speed up if it was done in a long tray rather than a bottle ?

My theory is in a tray, it will get more air exposure which is a big part of the steeping process (correct me if im wrong in thinking that).

I do mine in a small Tupperware tub (inch by 2 inch) but still takes a couple of weeks to steep

You need to strike a balance with what's practical. I suppose you could use shallow Tupperware types, but I prefer to steep in glass.

In time, you will plan ahead and have your mixes lined up. I steep custard for 3 months so have 3 months worth steeping at any time.

Container wont make any difference with steeping time.....The flavours/ingredients have to blend....It takes time...It's that simple, Air, or the lack of it wont make any difference....I mix mine and put it away in plastic bottles and open them again in a month or two (three for custards)...

Not this again...

If you are actually going to steep something, just leave it in a bottle with the lid on. Steeping is really pointless in my opinion, but do it if you feel it makes a difference.

Noobie here, but I noticed that all of my week long steeped ejuice is best than the one steeped 2,3,4 days.
Steeped it in a pyrex with rubber lead on.

From what I have read on the subject. All of the liquids involved in e-juice absorb moisture and particulate matter from the air. Steeping in the presence of air waters down the juice and can contaminate it if the air concerned is full of crap. With cheap chemical tasting juice the absorbed water can improve the flavour by muting the chemical taste, but if you intend to make good quality juice the end result of steeping with too much air would be to mute the flavours that you actually want, having a detrimental result on the finished product. If you live in a very dry desert like environment it might be different, but if you are in the UK, stick it in a bottle, pop it in a dark cupboard and if you must muck around with it just give it a shake every few days.

PG is miscible, which means it will actually draw in moisture from the surrounding air .. along with any contaminants that may be in that air. There is a reason in the profession we use clean environments and HEPA/ULPA filtered Laminar Flow to mix juice. (not that I have an issue with "kitchen" mixing at all - it where everything starts)

that is my take on steeping with the lid off.

however you are talking about the shape of a container ... I will assume you mean a sealed container .. in which case i doubt it would make much difference either way :)
