I've tried a couple of times but it failed, I think it's down to the mesh retaining so much residual heat and maybe altering the resistance. it just didn't vape right for me

I tried it a few times. The best results were using mesh with a thin layer of cotton between the mesh and the coil (also means you don't have to pulse out hot spots because the coil doesn't contact metal). It was an Aga T3 that I've never been able get to wick properly - I got constant dry hits in power mode, so tried TC with it before giving it away. The vape was pretty poor, but you'd expect that from a setup that doesn't wick properly. TC appeared to be working correctly.
I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work, but i'd say it's probably a good idea to use SS if the coil is in direct contact with the mesh, because you'll have to pulse out hotspots. Otherwise use a thin layer of cotton to insulate the mesh.
I think the question is whether mesh can wick well enough for a decent TC vape. I don't have enough experience with mesh to answer that.
