So basically they tested people who never use nicotine and found an increase in blood pressure, heart rate and arterial stiffness... They note "There was no such effect in the volunteers who smoked the e-cigarettes without nicotine" this is oddly sensationalistic for the Guardian.

^^ What @scrumpox said basically. This is old news, the Guardian should be ashamed of themselves. It's like slating botox injections on account of the fact that botulinum toxin is poisonous, and even small controlled doses can cause temporary muscle paralysis but totally ignore the fact that doses of botox can actually be very beneficial from a medical point of view.

Like there's nothing else going on in the world that's worth reporting?? Guess it makes a change from the wall-to-wall 'weather porn' coverage right now *rolls eyes*

I've just come across some bellends on Facebook talking about this. The sad thing is people will see this and not realise that the same effects can be seen in the examples like @scrumpox mentions.

'could' is a weasel word red flag.

In this case (and all advertising) you can almost certainly replace the word 'could' with the word 'might' which in turn you can replace with 'might or might not'.

At this point you realise that the sentence is not telling anyone anything useful so you drop it.. unless your motive is not information but manipulation.

I agree with except on the point of "oddly sensationalist" in regards to the guardian

its a bloody propaganda rag - as bad as the daily mail, but in the opposite direction.

that and the mail are my most hated papers, to an extent the guardian even more so - because it pretends to be liberal, where as the mail makes no bones about it being just short of utter facist.

This is a rehash of a previous study - I'm pretty sure that the methodology was utterly flawed as the method for measuring arterial stiffnes specifically say that to get accurate results the patient should refrain from Nicotine, Caffiene Alcohol and a whole list of other things for several hours before the test - Dr Farsalinos destoys this paper in One of his presentations...
