A while ago, I tried twisted Kanthal, for no other reason than that I had run out of thick, so had to twist two strands of thin.
I found the results to be a lot better than single strands, and of course, that may well be all in my mind. A 0.6 ohm twisted coil, just seems to function better than a 0.6 ohm single strand coil whether in kayfun and taifun style tanky things or drippers.
I only use twisted Kanthal these days, and I find that a half an hour with my dremel, twisting batches of wire, to be very therapeutic. :)

I just twist by hand: 28 gauge, pair of pliers and a 4mm allen key. Seems to work fine for me, my drippers end up at .6Ω :)

How do you work out the diameter/coils ratio? Is it just trial and error?

The coil calculator I use can be set to multiple strands and twisted wire. Its the steam one if anyone has a linky. I am on my phone at the mo and can't

It's not that difficult, and fairly non-guessy accurate. Doubling the wire halves the resistance, so if a regular coil that you build comes out at,say, 2.0ohms, then a twisted bit, made of two strands, of the same diameter, and using the same length/coils, the resistance will be half, ie 1.0 ohms. That's the easy part, when it comes to twisting kanthals of different sizes, the resistance is half of the combined thickness, eg, twisting 28awg (0.5ohms per inch resistance) with 32awg (1.2ohms per inch resistance) results in a per inch resistance of the combined thickness, halved. (twisted wire is ,in effect, a dual coil), which is a twisted wire thickness of 0.52mm. The resistance of that combination is, therefore half of the resistance per inch of a piece of 0.52mm kanthal. That's where my help fails, as I don't know, off hand, the resistance per inch of a 0.52mm wire! :P

Checking in with twisted .40 ;)
