What's new

white (hot) van man

That image has been used a few times by the fail, e.g. : E-cigarette explodes and starts fire after it overheated while charging | Daily Mail Online

From what I can make out, it's actually taken from a fire brigade webpage : London Fire Brigade - ?Exploding? e-cig leads to safety warning from Brigade and used as a 'stock' photo to illustrate what a buggered up battery looks like.

As I understand it, media outlets often use stock photos to illustrate points and it might be a bit difficult to get a complaint upheld unless they're deliberately misrepresenting the image?

Not that I'm saying don't attempt a complaint if you want to.. maybe if enough complaints are put it in it might spur more accurate reporting?

Phrasing a complaint right would take a bit of work I think, if they hadn't got the disclaimer underneath it would have been a slamdunk, but I think it might still be something worth doing a bit of research on. I'm not even sure that having a complaint upheld is essential, though of course it would be preferable, just sparking a bit of interest in how the media have been covering this subject might be a result.

So if this was charging in the van I'm guessing it was plugged into the cigerette lighter via a USB convertor, I'm not sure about the transit van but I've not had a motor where the cigerette lighter would work without keys in the on position.

Also reading the fire fighters reccomendations on charging.....

Charge on a flat stable surface such as a worktop

Keep the device away from flammable and combustible materials ? Wtf do they think worktops are ?

FYI

The cigarette lighter port in the Rover 25 Mk1 and Mk1.5 is only on when the keys are in and switched to position 2, but in the Mk2 it is a permanent live :)

Kitchen worktops with a laminated surface are generally heat resistant up to 140 degrees of dry heat.

Can't be 100% but would guess this is another result of using one of the still freely available adaptors which allow full current @5volts into an ego battery. My mobile charger can output 2.1 amps @ 5v. Using the wrong adaptor has and will, unfortunately continue to be highly dangerous.

None of the devices pictured can safely charge an ego battery as there is no regulation.
