Hi all. I posted this in another section but really should have posted here since I am new to all this. I have some 18650 batteries at home which I normally use in a really high powered torch. They are over 3000mah and I think they are protected. Can I use these in my zmax? What is the difference between protected and unprotected batteries and does it make a difference in my zmax? Also, what is the highest mAh batteries I can use in my zmax. Sorry for all the questions but I'm very new to the mod world. Thanks, Chris.

Chris.W the mah doesn't affect the use of batteries, this is how much power that is available for continuous use :)

What does the writing on the side of the battery say?

ICR, IMR etc then 18650 ...

Protected batteries are mainly used in mechanical mods, as the PCB is included and help prevent over discharge etc
Unprotected batteries are mainly used in VV/VW mods as they already have the PCB in the main body :)

If the battery is IMR 'safe chemistry' it should be safe to use in your Zmax

Hi. The writing says UltraFire BRC18650 3000mAh li-ion with Re/Discharging protection. Short circuit and over current protection. Thanks again.

I would not recommend using those in any vaping mods...

A rule of thumb in the vaping world is do not use any batteries that are named ****Fire, most on the forum will recommend purchasing from Torchy ;) He is our battery guru :)

On his website and he has information relating to the batteries you are enquiring about here

Torchy only has flat tops not button tops in the type needed

Sent from my HTC One X using Planet of the Vapes mobile app

Can I infer from the above that the VV/ VW mods can take both protected and unprotected batteries whereas mechanical mods need the protected ones?

Basically no, unless you have all the information regarding your batteries etc you are better staying within the normal guidelines, unprotected in mods with PCB protection and protected in mechanicals :)

Most VV/VW devices will not work correctly if you use protected batteries, mainly as the two PCB's will be fighting against each other to provide their safety features, however there have been exceptions :)

another small note with "nipple tops" especially on the zmax, is the extra length has occasionally been known to dislodge the internal workings slightly... flat is certainly the preferred way forward :D
