Am I going mad about the topside dual

The chip no doubt nails tc from what I can tell, and is easy enough to navigate, (although it is a tad more complicated to power off the mod than it needs to be) but it's missing preheat and custom curves in power mode. It doesn't even have a puff timer. It's just missing basic features I'd expect to see in a device. Though I did know all this when I bought it to be fair. I wanted it purely for it's sexy aesthetics.

As for the issues, the screen glitches out when you first turn it on, it has unequal battery drain, parasitic battery drain, and I've found overall battery life when in use to be pretty poor. The firmware update they released apparently fixes these problems. I just can't get those USB drivers to install, and belive me I've wasted hours trying lol.

I've had for about a month now and haven't noticed any screen glitches or unequal battery drain with mine. Battery life is fine and I don't know about any parasitic drain as I don't measure the cells in the morning and the display only shows bars rather than a digital %age.
Maybe you unfortunately got a duff one?

All of that sounds disappointing particularly given the cost of these devices now.

good luck getting the drivers on and the firmware applied.

They're well known issues that they released an update for. I don't know if it was only the early batches that were effected. My married batteries always have different readings when I've used them in my carbon and stick them in the charger. One will be 3.52v and the other 3.64v for example. That never happens when I use them in any of my other mods.

I have 2 Topsides and haven't had any issues with mine, even my Topside Lite and Topside single work perfectly. Can't say anything about the unequal battery drain on the Lite and Single but my Duals are always equal with Battery Drain, Topsides are i think are my Favourite mods when it comes to usage and reliability. I would always give them 10/10, great mods.

Sounds like it’s specific to the carbon because that one has a different chip (yihi vs dovpo) afaik.

Weird because Yihi Chips are normally pretty much spot on, i say this because my Hadron has a Yihi Chip and never come across battery problems with that. I couldn't tell you the chip number from the top of my head but yeah all good.

When I was looking around recently there were comments by one or two reviewers that this particular yihi is a one of, hence the different menu and reduced functionality. Maybe this accounts for the mod specific problems? Like others have said, it can be fixed with the firmware update but it is a disappointment given yihi heritage.

It was a chip created specially for the topside carbon. But its a really dumbed down neutered YiHi chipset. It has basic wattage mode, and joules/TC mode. That's all. It doesn't have the usual bluetooth or any customisation options. They wanted it simple and user friendly.

Well that seems a bit silly just putting that chip in the Carbon, my duals were out at the similar time when the Carbon was released and both are Limited Edition and have the normal Dovpo chip as far as i know. I can't understand why they would do something like that, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" springs to mind.
